{"id":767384,"date":"2024-04-10T13:53:59","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T11:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=767384"},"modified":"2024-04-10T13:54:03","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T11:54:03","slug":"the-struggle-continues-for-south-african-consumers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/767384\/the-struggle-continues-for-south-african-consumers\/","title":{"rendered":"The struggle continues for South African consumers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s economy is barely moving, even if economists predict that growth in 2024 will be better than in 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BankservAfrica Economic Transactions Index (BETI), which measures the monthly value of interbank electronic transactions, showed a slight sign of recovery in March following a disappointing February. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe BETI reached an index level of 133.4, improving by 1.3% compared to a year earlier and 0.8% up from the previous month,\u201d said Shergeran Naidoo, BankservAfrica\u2019s Head of Stakeholder Engagements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspension of load shedding near the end of March, which is continuing, has had a positive impact on economic activity in the last week of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the<strong> index was only 0.7% higher than the average measured in the last six months. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent economist Elize Kruger said that <strong>economic activity has largely moved sideways over the last half-year. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BETI-MARCH-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BETI-MARCH-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-767387\" style=\"width:748px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BETI-MARCH-.jpg 534w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BETI-MARCH--300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Overall, load shedding, logistics challenges and renewed pressure on fuel prices have added to the &#8216;more of the same&#8217; narrative for the economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The slow growth momentum is having a negative impact on unemployment and the nation&#8217;s social-economic challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncertainty and volatility in an important election year have made the situation even more challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"M4ippcJd38\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/767301\/zuma-cleared-to-run-for-parliament-in-2024-elections\/\">Zuma cleared to run for parliament in 2024 elections<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Zuma cleared to run for parliament in 2024 elections&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/767301\/zuma-cleared-to-run-for-parliament-in-2024-elections\/embed\/#?secret=Ei50lnRE4S#?secret=M4ippcJd38\" data-secret=\"M4ippcJd38\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumer inflation also increased from 5.3% in January to 5.6% in February, primarily driven by higher fuel prices, the weak rand exchange rate and an increase in medical aid premiums. Inflation is expected to see an average of 5.3% in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the BETI published in real terms, the stickiness of price impacts the BETI deflator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kruger said that the BETI deflator stood at 5.1% in December but ticked higher to 5.4% and 5.6% in January and February 2024, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other nowcast indicators also dropped in March, with the S&amp;P Global South Africa Purchasing Managers\u2019 Index (PMI) declining below the neutral level of 50, with businesses seeing the sharpest rate of decline in new order volumes for two years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"koJ9jHooax\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/765871\/another-step-backwards-for-south-africa\/\">Another step backwards for South Africa<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Another step backwards for South Africa&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/765871\/another-step-backwards-for-south-africa\/embed\/#?secret=KJhXbiqJD1#?secret=koJ9jHooax\" data-secret=\"koJ9jHooax\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ABSA PMI also dropped as both business activity and new sales orders declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naamsa also said that new vehicle sales dropped by 11.7% compared to a year prior, which was linked to higher interest rates, dampened consumer confidence, the nation&#8217;s port challenges, and consistent load shedding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking slightly more positively, the standardised nominal value of transactions cleared through BankservAfrica increased from R1.250 trillion in February to R1.305 trillion in March 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total number of transactions also grew from 155.5 million to 156.1 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naidoo said that the average value of transactions in March 2024 was 6.0% lower compared to a year prior. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Looking up<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the challenging economic environment, a slight improvement is expected in the second half of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExpectations of lower international interest rates later in the year could spur a better-performing rand exchange and further moderation in consumer inflation.
