with relief still a while away"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Retail trade sales in South Africa have declined, with economists highlighting the challenges facing the South African consumer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Stat SA, retail trade sales, measured in real terms (constant 2019 prices), decreased by 0.8% year-on-year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main negative contributor to this decrease was retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (-6.8% and contributing -1.1 percentage points).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the seven sectors surveyed, four recorded positive contributions to the overall outcome on a three-month basis (up 0.5%), with general dealers also showing the largest contribution as consumers focussed on necessities in a tough environment.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/STATS-SA-RETAIL-FEB-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"741\" height=\"286\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/STATS-SA-RETAIL-FEB-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-768378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/STATS-SA-RETAIL-FEB-.jpg 741w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/STATS-SA-RETAIL-FEB--300x116.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Stats SA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Investec Chief Economist Annabel Bishop said that inflation, which decreased from 5.6% in February to 5.3% in March, has a major effect on consumer affordability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) recently reaffirmed its battle to combat high inflation and will only cut interest rates when CPI inflation returns to around 4.5% y\/y. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mrNh5ifc6n\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/768306\/big-trouble-for-interest-rate-cuts-in-south-africa\/\">Big trouble for interest rate cuts in South Africa<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; said Bishop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Indeed, there is a risk of no interest rate cut this year.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Outlook <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siphamandla Mkhwanazi, FNB Senior Economist, said that retail volumes reflect a subdued consumer demand environment, which should continue in the near term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Furthermore, the prevailing tight lending standards and high debt service cost environment should keep credit growth relatively contained, both in the bank and non-bank sectors, and thus provide less support to consumption,&#8221;
