Although South Africans are facing increases in petrol and other cost-of-living expenses, some car brands and models remain favourites among South Africans who could afford a new car in February 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Naamsa\u2019s latest stats, new vehicle sales experienced double-digit declines across the board in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2024, the new vehicle market continued to decline, a trend which started eight months ago but is only getting worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total number of new vehicles sold in the domestic market was 44,237, which is a decrease of 11.7% (5,877 units) from the 50,114 cars sold in March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new passenger car market was hit harder, with only 26,577 units sold, representing a decline of 15.9% (5,024 cars) compared to the 31,601 new cars sold in March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Export sales were even worse, with only 24,161 units sold in March 2024, a decrease of 27.1% (8,975 units) compared to the 33,136 vehicles exported in March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, for the first quarter of 2024, aggregate new vehicle sales were now 5.3% below the corresponding quarter in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe effect of the South African Reserve Bank\u2019s aggressive monetary policy stance by hiking interest rates to contain inflation took some time to filter through to new vehicle sales, which continue to add to the prevailing negative sentiment,\u201d said Naamsa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDue to ongoing cost pressures, including escalating fuel costs, along with interest rates, affordability remains a decisive factor in purchasing decisions as consumers increasingly turn to more budget-friendly vehicles,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toyota remained the top-selling brand with 11,109 units sold last month, which is slightly lower than February\u2019s 11,524 units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkswagen maintained its position as the second most popular brand with 5,219 sales, while Suzuki secured the third position on the list of top sellers last month with 4,335 sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  7. Isuzu<\/strong> \u2013 2,587 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. GWM<\/strong> \u2013 1,564 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Chery <\/strong>\u2013 1,531 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Renault <\/strong>\u2013 1,301 units<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
