Eskom has announced that it has started stage 1 load shedding due to high demand and emergency maintenance.<\/p>\n

“We would like to appeal to customers to reduce their electricity usage as much as they can, as it will ease the pressure on the system,” the group said.<\/p>\n

The announcement follows a week of severe strain on the national grid after two generators failed on Wednesday (7 January), and an influx of people returning from holiday put more pressure on the grid.<\/p>\n

Stage one load shedding allows for up to 1000MW of the national load to be shed; stage two for up to 2000MW; and stage three for up to 4000MW.<\/p>\n

According to Eskom’s own power projections to March 2015, January’s power situation was expected to be the best out of the first three months of the year.<\/p>\n

The power system will be severely constrained for the next two years, until at least 2 units of Medupi power station come online, Eskom said.<\/p>\n

The first unit missed its December activation deadline, which was postponed to mid-January.<\/p>\n
