with more pain expected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Liquidations in South Africa are down, but businesses in South Africa still face a tough operating environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total number of liquidations dropped by 17.9% year-on-year in March 2024 to 138 &#8211; in line with February&#8217;s numbers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 138 businesses, 125 did so on a voluntary basis, while 13 did so on a compulsory basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liquidations of close corporations decreased by 17 cases year-on-year, while liquidations of companies decreased by 13 cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total number of liquidations in the first quarter of 2024 (385) was down 6.3% from the first quarter of 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of industry, financing, insurance, real estate, and business services saw the most liquidations at 46, followed by the unclassified (35) and trade, catering and accommodation (33) industries. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stats-sa-liquid-march-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stats-sa-liquid-march--1024x409.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-769400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stats-sa-liquid-march--1024x409.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stats-sa-liquid-march--300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stats-sa-liquid-march--768x307.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stats-sa-liquid-march-.jpg 1084w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Stats SA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/768806\/businesses-in-south-africa-are-struggling-with-the-new-normal\/\">Deloitte Africa Restructuring Survey<\/a>, respondents said the local economy could take up to three years to reach pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the survey showed that \u2018pessimism\u2019 amongst respondents had fallen from 81% in 2023 to 75% in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Jo Mitchell-Marais, Africa Turnaround &amp; in which businesses find themselves, is characterised by elevated load sending, 15-year high interest rates, ineffective ports and political uncertainty linked to the national election in May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompanies are trying to operate in spite of these challenges, but we are far from being \u2018optimistic\u2019 given the&nbsp;Fitch Ratings&nbsp;forecast of real GDP growth only increasing by 0,9% in 2024 and 1.3% in 2025,\u201d said Mitchell-Marais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> South African organisations are expected to face real challenges in the &#8220;new normal&#8221;, and further business distress should be expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey revealed that informal operational restructuring will be the main priority, with business rescue seen as a last resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"wyA6NLNssO\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/767511\/its-over-for-ellies\/\">It&#8217;s over for Ellies<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; main internal factor triggering distress was weak board governance, with a lack of cash management and weak financial controls coming in second and third, respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe development of skilled and qualified directors will go a long way in assisting to improve the board\u2019s ability to both identify early warning signs of distress and take appropriate, timely, and corrective action,&#8221;
