{"id":769498,"date":"2024-04-25T16:08:10","date_gmt":"2024-04-25T14:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=769498"},"modified":"2024-04-25T16:08:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T14:08:15","slug":"boost-for-meat-prices-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/769498\/boost-for-meat-prices-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Boost for meat prices in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Inflation for producers has seen an overall increase, but there are positive developments regarding meat inflation, with price increase fears subsiding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Stats SA, headline producer price inflation (PPI) jumped from 4.5% year-on-year in February to 4.6% in March &#8211; slightly above the consensus expectations from Bloomberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PPI looks at inflation from the producer\u2019s perspective before it hits consumers, with a decrease in PPI generally good news for CPI \u2013 which dropped from 5.6% in Feburary to 5.3% in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main contributors to the headline PPI annual inflation rate were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>food products, beverages and tobacco products (increased by 4.4% year-on-year and contributed 1.3 percentage points);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (increased by 4.6% year-on-year and contributed 1.1 percentage points); <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>metals, machinery, equipment and computing equipment (increased by 5.5% year-on-year and contributed 0.8 of a percentage point)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The main contributors to the headline 0.1% PPI monthly increase were coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (increased by 2,5% month-on-month and contributed 0,6 of a percentage point)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investec Economist Lara Hodes said that the R1.00 increase in petrol and diesel prices in March underpinned the increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the April increase was smaller, it will still add upward pressure on the upcoming reading. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-49.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"991\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-49.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-769499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-49.png 991w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-49-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-49-768x464.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 991px) 100vw, 991px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Manufactured food inflation fell from 4.4% year-on-year to 3.6% in March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A breakdown from the food basket shows that meat and products price inflation dropped from 4.2% to 2.7%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/opinionista\/2024-04-24-south-africas-food-inflation-falls-to-lowest-level-since-september-2020\/\">Agbiz Chief Economist Wandile Sihlobo<\/a>, supply constraints on poultry products due to the outbreak of avian influenza resulted in meat price inflation at the end of last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut there is now anecdotal evidence that the restocking process is underway and t<strong>here is improvement in the poultry products supplies<\/strong>. Therefore, the risks of <strong>further price increases have subsided somewhat<\/strong>,\u201d said Sihlobo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the other food products category (which includes bakery products, sugar and other food) saw prices fall from 7.6% to 6.6%.
