{"id":770051,"date":"2024-05-01T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-01T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=770051"},"modified":"2024-04-30T16:17:51","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T14:17:51","slug":"these-are-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-polluters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/770051\/these-are-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-polluters\/","title":{"rendered":"These are the world&#8217;s biggest plastic polluters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Only 56 companies are responsible for more than 50% of the world&#8217;s branded plastic pollution, with six of these companies accounting for 24%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is according to a new study titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adj8275?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D72077797092235851240392577489555653962%7CMCORGID%3D242B6472541199F70A4C98A6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1713919364\">Global producer responsibility for plastic pollution<\/a> published in the journal Science Advances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It identifies the Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, and Nestl\u00e9 as the world&#8217;s worst-known brand plastic polluters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic production worldwide has increased by over 100% since 2000, reaching around 400 million metric tonnes annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In South Africa, approximately 2.4 million metric tonnes of plastic waste is generated annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This surge in production has resulted in a corresponding increase in plastic waste, which can now be found in virtually every part of the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, researchers wanted to attempt to quantify and locate the sources of pollution whilst providing viable alternatives to counter this scourge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the main challenges of addressing plastic pollution is identifying where the plastic products come from and who produced them,&#8221; said the researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Ocean-plastic-pollution.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Ocean-plastic-pollution.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-770079\" style=\"width:618px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Ocean-plastic-pollution.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Ocean-plastic-pollution-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Ocean-plastic-pollution-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Plastic polluting the ocean. Photo: Rich Carey<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The study<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The international team of over 100,000 volunteers conducted a five-year study across 84 countries (including South Africa) and six continents, collecting and surveying more than 1.87 million items of plastic waste<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unbranded plastic items comprised 52% of the total mean.
