{"id":770432,"date":"2024-05-02T16:55:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T14:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=770432"},"modified":"2024-05-02T17:01:46","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T15:01:46","slug":"moodys-sends-election-warning-to-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/770432\/moodys-sends-election-warning-to-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Moody&#8217;s sends election warning to South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa may struggle to make much more progress on resolving the country\u2019s longstanding challenges if a coalition government emerges after elections this month, Moody\u2019s Investors Service cautioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese include stimulating years of sluggish economic growth, curbing chronic power shortages and reducing very high unemployment,\u201d said Aurelien Mali, vice president &#8211; senior credit officer at Moody\u2019s. \u201cThe current government has made incremental progress on these issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opinion polls suggest the ruling African National Congress could lose its national majority in the May 29 elections for the first time since taking power in 1994. Growth has been hampered by fraying port and rail networks, crime and state-owned utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.\u2019s inability to meet electricity demand due to poor maintenance and aging power plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s EFF Has Lost Support to the New MK Party | Former President Jacob Zuma&#8217;s party is gaining ground<br>\u201cThe election raises the possibility that policies from comparatively radical parties, including policies not friendly to investors, will emerge,\u201d Mali said. \u201cYet we believe the ANC will remain the dominant political force in South Africa, even within a ruling political coalition, which limits the risks of an abrupt shift from the current mix of economic and financial policies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Ipsos poll released on April 26 showed ANC support at 40.2% compared with the 57.5% it won in the 2019 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also suggested the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe Party backed by former President Jacob Zuma is sucking voters away from the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters.
