{"id":771000,"date":"2024-05-08T12:35:08","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T10:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=771000"},"modified":"2024-05-08T12:35:12","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T10:35:12","slug":"south-african-insurers-are-shooting-themselves-in-the-foot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/771000\/south-african-insurers-are-shooting-themselves-in-the-foot\/","title":{"rendered":"South African insurers are shooting themselves in the foot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s insurance industry faces severe risks due to global warming but is also heavily responsible for the crisis, which could result in significant premium increases in the near future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ronald Richman, chief actuary at Old Mutual Insure, recently said that South Africa has seen an increase in major weather-related claims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the country used to be a Catastrophic Event (CAT) free zone, the scale and magnitude at which disasters have taken place recently means we are now experiencing a dramatic shift in the CAT landscape,\u201d said Richman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Old Mutual Insure recorded ten major weather-related claim events, which included the Western Cape storms in June and September and the hailstorm in Gauteng and Mpumalanga in November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa is not necessarily unique in this situation, with some experts believing that the US economy is overexposed to climate risks in a manner similar to the mortgage risks in 2008, which were a leading cause of the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Given this picture, it is not far-fetched to believe that climate change has the potential to destabilise the global insurance industry, with ripple effects for South Africa,\u201d said Richman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"CYhhDqDNb6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/770092\/insurance-crisis-on-the-cards-for-south-africa\/\">Insurance crisis on the cards for South Africa<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Sasol profits tank as SOE failures take their toll&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/754947\/sasol-profits-tank-as-soe-failures-take-their-toll\/embed\/#?secret=kmwT7yYRlx#?secret=JUHgUiuwy7\" data-secret=\"JUHgUiuwy7\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the insurance of arms of these companies position themselves as climate warriors, they are still still investing billion of their clients that share&nbsp;responsibility for climate impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davies said that this will cause huge increases in insurance premiums in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The soft, friendly approach to responsible investment adopted by South Africa\u2019s major institutional investors sends a clear message to big emitters: we need to look like we\u2019re taking this seriously, but what we really care about is short-term returns, so don\u2019t do anything too drastic,&#8221;
