for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s economy has seen a period of strong performance, but there are still major challenges facing the country, such as the upcoming election. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BankservAfrica Economic Transactions Index (BETI), which measures all interbank economic activity processed by BankservAfrica, jumped in April to its highest level in eight months. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReaching an index level of 134.2 in April, the&nbsp;BETI&nbsp;has almost reached last August\u2019s level and improved by 0.6% on a monthly basis,\u201d&nbsp;said Shergeran Naidoo,&nbsp;BankservAfrica\u2019s&nbsp;Head of Stakeholder Engagements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the end of March, load shedding has been suspended, which has had a positive impact on economic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spending in anticipation of the upcoming elections could have also played a role, with economic activity for political party campaigns and the&nbsp;IEC\u2019s&nbsp;preparation activities likely to be seen in additional retail spending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"514\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-771101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-13.png 514w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-13-300x203.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A breakdown of the BETU around the election data shows that economic activity picked up the month before an election in 6 of the 9 elections under review. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the BETI increased in 7 of the 8 cases of the month of the election itself (2024 not included). <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-771103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-14.png 723w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-14-300x101.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile other&nbsp;developments in the economy&nbsp;are also reflected&nbsp;in the performance of the&nbsp;BETI, election-related spending could make a meaningful impact on the&nbsp;BETI in the period around election dates,\u201d&nbsp;said Elize Kruger, Independent Economist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other nowcast indicators also jumped in April, with the S&amp;P Global South Africa Purchasing Managers\u2019 Index (PMI), which measures the operating conditions of the private sector, increasing to 50.3 in April, moving it into positive territory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ABSA PMI also jumped to 54 index points due to improved business activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"S3h9DbYlSy\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/770302\/bright-spark-for-south-africas-economy\/\">Bright spark for South Africa&#8217;s economy<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Bright spark for South Africa&#8217;s economy&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/770302\/bright-spark-for-south-africas-economy\/embed\/#?secret=G5T8Irb0gI#?secret=S3h9DbYlSy\" data-secret=\"S3h9DbYlSy\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, new vehicle sales in April improved by 2.2% year-on-year\u2014the first time since July 2023 that monthly sales outperformed those of a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standardised nominal value of the transactions cleared through BankservAfrica in April 2024 , however, decreased to R1.290 trillion&nbsp;fro, R1.305 trillion in March, even if the number of transactions jumped to 157.0 million from 156.1 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although April saw a &#8220;blip of positivity&#8221; there are still several challenges facing the country, such as the uncertainty surrounding the election outcome and what that would mean for the economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors also have a &#8216;wait-and-see approach,&#8217; with South Africa expected to turn a corner&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/769594\/investors-are-biding-their-time-with-south-africa-expected-to-turn-a-corner\/embed\/#?secret=DIMTipGsW8#?secret=19tLs8mAyC\" data-secret=\"19tLs8mAyC\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAssuming the election outcome will not lead to a&nbsp;major&nbsp;disruption in macroeconomic policies, a slight improvement in the economic scenario is still forecast towards the end of the year,\u201d said Kruger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headline inflation is expected to be around 4.5% in December, with the 50 basis points interest rate cuts expected by the year-end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With load shedding expected to be less intense than in 2023, GDP growth is also expected to increase from 0.6% in 2023 to 1.1% in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Although still too low to make a meaningful dent in the unemployment rate, this is somewhat better than the previous year,&#8221;
