{"id":771312,"date":"2024-05-09T16:42:50","date_gmt":"2024-05-09T14:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=771312"},"modified":"2024-05-09T16:42:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T14:42:55","slug":"manufacturing-drags-south-africas-gdp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/771312\/manufacturing-drags-south-africas-gdp\/","title":{"rendered":"Manufacturing drags South Africa&#8217;s GDP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Manufacturing production in South Africa has fallen well short of market expectations and will hurt the upcoming GDP figures for Q1 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturing production contracted by a notable 6.4% year-on-year in March, following a revised 4.0% increase in February. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outcome was far weaker than the Bloomberg consensus of a 0.3% year-on-year lift. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following divisions made the largest negative contributions <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment\u00a0(-25.9% and contributing -2.7 percentage points);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0Basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery (-9.0% and contributing \u20111.9 percentage points); and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products\u00a0(-3.9% and contributing -0.8 of a percentage point).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production dropped by 2.2% in March 2024 compared with February 2024, following a 1,0% month-on-month decrease in February 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investec economist Lara Hodes said that <strong>quarter-on-quarter production decreased by 1.0% in Q1 2024, <\/strong>which will detract from the country&#8217;s Q1 2024 GDP reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hodes said that the negative results were related to the ABSA Purchasing Managers\u2019 index for March, which moved into contractionary territory (below the neutral 50 score), where the business activity and new sales orders\u2019 indices dropped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, South Africa isn&#8217;t at risk of a technical recession (two consecutive quarters of contractions in GDP) as GDP increased by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter in Q4 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"707\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-15.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-771314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-15.png 707w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-15-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Outlook <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Despite the persistent challenges, the manufacturing sector has exhibited remarkable resilience.
