Firstly, tenants should seal windows and doors<\/strong>, as drafts can seriously increase heating costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “Check for drafts around windows and doors. Use weather stripping or draft stoppers to keep the cold air out,” said Gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tenants should also test their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n “Winter sees an increased use of heating appliances, which can raise the risk of home fires or carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working correctly,” said Gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tenants should also clear their gutters and drains<\/strong> to prevent water damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “Blocked gutters can lead to water build-up and damage. Clearing them can prevent costly issues down the road.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n Inspecting insulation <\/strong>is also key, as proper insulation is crucial to maintaining warmth and reducing energy bills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, tenants should communicate with their rental agent and landlord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Keep an open line of communication with your rental agent and landlord about any major winterisation needs or issues that arise,” Gray said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Quick reporting can stop minor issues from becoming major problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “This checklist not only helps tenants maintain a comfortable and safe living environment but also assists in preserving the condition of the property, benefiting both tenants and landlords.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
