{"id":771837,"date":"2024-05-14T11:51:05","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T09:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=771837"},"modified":"2024-05-14T11:51:11","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T09:51:11","slug":"unemployment-rate-ticks-higher-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/771837\/unemployment-rate-ticks-higher-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Unemployment rate ticks higher in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s unemployment rate has increased to 32.9%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Stats SA&#8217;s latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey, the number of employed persons jumped by 22,000 quarterly to 16.7 million in Q1 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the number of unemployed persons increased by 330,000 to 8.2 million over the same quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the number of people who were not economically active for reasons other than discouragement decreased by 214,000 to 13.1 million. Discouraged work-seekers decreased by 1,000 in Q1 2024 compared to the fourth quarter of 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This caused a net decrease of 215,000 in the not economically active population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, the official unemployment rate increased by 0.8 of a percentage point from 32.1% in Q4 2023 to 32.9% in Q1 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unemployment rate, according to the expanded definition, also jumped by 0.8 of a percentage point to 41.9% in Q1 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-22-1024x428.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-771839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-22-1024x428.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-22-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-22-768x321.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-22-1536x642.png 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-22.png 1539w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Formal sector employment jumped by 56,000 in Q1 2024, while informal sector employment decreased by 100,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industries that contributed the most to the net employment increase included Trade (up by 109,000),<br>Manufacturing (up by 99,000), Private households (up by 44,000), Transport (up by 39,000), Agriculture (21,000) and Mining (9,000). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employment losses were recorded Community and social services (122,000), Construction (106,000), Finance (50,000) and Utilities (17,000).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-23-1024x480.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-771842\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-23-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-23-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-23-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-23.png 1382w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Provinces that recorded jumps in employment were KwaZulu-Natal (35,000), Gauteng (26,000) and Northern Cape (4,000) quarter-on-quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining provinces, except the Free State which remained unchanged, all saw decreases, with the Western Cape (17,000) seeing the largest drop. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-24.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-24-1024x411.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-771844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-24-1024x411.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-24-300x120.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-24-768x308.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-24.png 1431w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>&#8220;The youth (15 to 34 years) remain vulnerable in the labour market; the first quarter of 2024 results show that the total number of unemployed youth increased by 236,000 to 4.9 million while there was a decrease of 7,000 in the number of employed youth to 5.9 million,&#8221;
