{"id":773377,"date":"2024-05-23T13:27:33","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T11:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=773377"},"modified":"2024-05-23T13:27:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T11:27:38","slug":"investors-like-what-they-see-from-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/773377\/investors-like-what-they-see-from-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Investors like what they see from South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Investors believe South African equities are set for a strong performance after the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the latest Bank of America (BofA) Fund Manager Survey, managers are more bullish about equity, with a net 53% expecting equity growth over the next 12 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Domestic stocks are expected to lead the rally post-elections, with economic sensitives and heavy industrials showing increased positioning,&#8221; said the group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Risks include political shifts to the left, with 74% of managers anticipating a rally in domestic stocks post-elections on May 29th.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Net Bulls<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>March<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>April<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>May<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South African equities<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">60%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">29%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">53%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South African bonds<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">13%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">35%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">5%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Cash<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">-47%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">-53%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">-47%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Commodity prices<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">-20%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">-6%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">-5%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A separate Bloomberg survey also showed that investors are widely convinced that stocks, bonds, and the rand will keep soaring after the elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 26 emerging-market investors, most were overweight or neutral to South Africa, with many preferring to invest in the country over Egypt and Nigeria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It highlights the shift in investor sentiment over South Africa with the country, with many previously hesitant to invest due to load shedding and mismanagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the ANC is expected to lose its majority in parliament, it is believed that it will still get enough votes to avoid enlisting less market-friendly rivals as coalition partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe election uncertainty has been weighing on South Africa, so an outcome that rules out a populist government would be received well by the market,\u201d said Kaan Nazli, a portfolio manager at Neuberger Berman Asset Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nazli said that a market-friendly outcome would also allow the government to focus on structural reforms to boost economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-82.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-82.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-773261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-82.png 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-82-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-82-768x369.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Still some concerns <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the overall improvement in sentiment, the BofA survey did highlight some concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A smaller net of 53% believes that the economy will get a &#8216;little stronger&#8217;. With the economy only growing by 0.6% in 2023, a little stronger is nothing to write home about and is unlikely to keep pace with population growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar net of 63% expects inflation to be only &#8216;slightly lower.&#8217;
