{"id":774236,"date":"2024-05-28T15:17:50","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T13:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=774236"},"modified":"2024-05-28T15:17:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T13:17:55","slug":"south-africa-kisses-over-500-businesses-goodbye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/774236\/south-africa-kisses-over-500-businesses-goodbye\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa kisses over 500 businesses goodbye"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Businesses in South Africa are continuing to shut their doors, with April being a particularly tough month for many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Stats SA, the total number of liquidations jumped by 14.3% in April 2024 compared to April 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compulsory liquidations increased by 12 cases to 25, and voluntary liquidations increased by 4 cases to 103 over the period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the number of liquidations for the three months ended April 2024 was 8.6% less than in the corresponding period in 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also a year-to-date decrease of 1.9% from the same period in 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, 513 businesses have been liquidated in 2024 so far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On an industry-specific level, the financing, insurance, real estate and business services; and unclassified industries saw the most closures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The electricity, gas and water industry is yet to see a liquidation in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-114.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-114-1024x409.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-774245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-114-1024x409.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-114-300x120.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-114-768x307.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-114.png 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The recent Deloitte Africa Restructuring Survey showed that respondents believed that the local economy could take up to three years to reach pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, the survey showed that \u2018pessimism\u2019 had fallen from 81% in 2023 to 75% in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jo Mitchell-Marais, Africa Turnaround &amp; Restructuring Leader for Deloitte Africa, said that the new rating doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that respondents feel optimistic but that they have instead accepted the current economic situation and expressed resilience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cnew normal\u201d is characterised by elevated load shedding, soaring interest rates, ineffective ports,\u00a0and ongoing political uncertainty\u00a0due to the upcoming election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompanies are trying to operate in spite of these challenges, but we are far from being \u2018optimistic\u2019 given the\u00a0Fitch Ratings\u00a0forecast of real GDP growth only increasing by 0,9% in 2024 and 1.3% in 2025,\u201d said Mitchell-Marais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new normal is expected to create new challenges for the organisation, with further business distress expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to respondents, weak board governance was the primary internal factor triggering distress, followed by a lack of cash management and weak financial controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe development of skilled and qualified directors will go a long way in assisting to improve the board\u2019s ability to both identify early warning signs of distress and take appropriate, timely, and corrective action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is crucial that they have their finger\u00a0on the pulse of the business and broader socio-political and economic activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-115.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-115-1024x440.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-774256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-115-1024x440.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-115-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-115-768x330.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-115.png 1432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/774097\/how-much-it-costs-to-live-in-the-best-run-municipality-in-south-africa-2\/\">How much it costs to live in the best-run municipality in South Africa<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa has seen a massive jump in year-on-year liquidations for April, with further strain expected from the &#8220;new normal.&#8221;
