{"id":775050,"date":"2024-06-06T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=775050"},"modified":"2024-06-06T14:53:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T12:53:39","slug":"how-long-workers-in-south-africa-stay-at-their-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/775050\/how-long-workers-in-south-africa-stay-at-their-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"How long workers in South Africa stay at their jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Those working in Telecommunications have the longest job tenure in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pnet has published its latest Job Market Trends Report, which states that long-term employee tenure enhances productivity, stability, and expertise and helps foster a reliable and experienced workforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, long-standing employees may resist change and become complacent, whereas short-term employee tenure introduces fresh ideas, adaptability, and ambition\/ <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, short-term employees result in higher turnover costs and less institutional knowledge, meaning a balance can optimise organisational success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pnet&#8217;s data showed that the average tenure is an average of 3 years and 1 month, but this differs across sectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business &amp;  9y 4m (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Senior Management &#8211;  8y (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Team Leader &amp; Supervisor &#8211; 7y 6m (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Executive Management \/ Director &#8211; 6y 8m (on average)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Admin, Office &amp; Support roles also show potentially very long employee tenures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Admin Clerk &#8211; 8y 5m (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Client \/ Customer Support &#8211; 2y 1m (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical Scientist 2y &#8211; (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agricultural \/ Food Technologist &#8211; 2y (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chemical \/ Materials Technologist &#8211; 1y 11m (on average)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UX \/ GUI Design &#8211; 1y 1m (on average)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Pnet also investigated job search activity regarding employees working in new job roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It analysed job roles in which new employees applied for at least five other job opportunities in the first six months of employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis, which is based on the last five years, highlights the most actively job-seeking employees: <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finance professionals &#8211; 16% applying for jobs within the first six months of having<br>started a new job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Information Technology professionals &#8211; 13% actively looking for a new career<br>opportunities within the first six months of being in a new job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manufacturing &amp; Assembly professionals &#8211; 11% applying for new roles within the<br>first six months of landing a new role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Business &amp; Management professionals &#8211; 11% seeking new job opportunities<br>within the first 6 months of starting a new job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On a job role level, 23% of Payroll &amp; Wages professionals keep applying for jobs despite just starting a new job.
