Eskom has published a load shedding schedule through to April 2015 as it continues its financial and operational struggle.<\/p>\n

Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona warned last week\u00a0that the power utility\u00a0is likely to load shed on most days in the near future.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the power utility said it hoped that it would not need to implement load shedding in the upcoming week.<\/p>\n

“For now, our aspiration is not to have load shedding at all [for the week ahead],” said Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe.<\/p>\n

However, he warned, that the possibility could not be ruled out entirely: “Because we are running an old system, we do experience technical faults from time to time.”<\/p>\n

Phasiwe said that it was normal for there to be outages at “one or two stations due to various technical situations,” but said that at the moment there were no dire incidents.<\/p>\n

Matona said in an operational update last week, that the country’s power supply would remain severely constrained in the coming months while Eskom dealt with its maintenance backlog.<\/p>\n

In February 900 megawatts is to be taken off the grid when one of Koeberg nuclear power station’s units undergoes maintenance.<\/p>\n

Matona has said that Eskom will need 5,000 MW in order to address its maintenance backlog.<\/p>\n

The power utility provided a chart of its expected load-shedding through to April:<\/p>\n

The Democratic Alliance, meanwhile, warned that it had received reports that Unit 6 at the Medupi power station in Limpopo was “not working as it should”.<\/p>\n

“It is believed that there is a huge problem with the design of the piping and as a result it will not operate correctly,” the political party said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The DA noted that Medupi is two years late and R40 billion over budget.<\/p>\n
