{"id":776520,"date":"2024-06-12T07:59:31","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T05:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=776520"},"modified":"2024-06-12T07:59:37","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T05:59:37","slug":"ramaphosa-signs-three-new-laws-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/776520\/ramaphosa-signs-three-new-laws-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa signs three new laws for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa has assented into law three separate Bills with significant changes for transport and development taxes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three Bills are the National Land Transport Amendment Bill, the Economic Regulation of Transport Bill and the Municipal Fiscal Powers and Functions Amendment Bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President signed the three Bills ahead of Parliament&#8217;s first sitting on Friday, 14 June, when the National Assembly will elect the next President. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the ANC losing its majority for the first time since the start of democracy, Ramaphosa could lose his Presidency. However, this is incredibly unlikely amid talks of a Government of National Unity (GNU). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"3TZcBeqWMl\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/776082\/this-isnt-1994-south-africa-heading-into-the-unknown-with-gnu-2024\/\">This isn&#8217;t 1994: South Africa heading into the unknown with GNU 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;This isn&#8217;t 1994: South Africa heading into the unknown with GNU 2024&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/776082\/this-isnt-1994-south-africa-heading-into-the-unknown-with-gnu-2024\/embed\/#?secret=7Y2hcTT5L6#?secret=3TZcBeqWMl\" data-secret=\"3TZcBeqWMl\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Summaries of the new laws are below: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/NationalLandTransportAmendmentAct-final.pdf\">National Land Transport Amendment Bill<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Presidency said the Bill was initially passed by Parliament and sent to the President for assent in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, amid constitutional concerns, Ramaphosa referred the Bill back to the National Assembly for reconsideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revised Bill seeks to amend the National Land Transport Act, 2009, by inserting and amending specific definitions and providing for non-motorised and accessible transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The amendments bring the Principal Act up to date with new developments and provide for certain powers of provinces and municipalities to conclude contracts for public transport services.
