{"id":780738,"date":"2024-07-04T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-04T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=780738"},"modified":"2024-07-03T17:07:17","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T15:07:17","slug":"new-rankings-for-universities-in-south-africa-trying-to-make-a-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/780738\/new-rankings-for-universities-in-south-africa-trying-to-make-a-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"New rankings for universities in South Africa trying to make a difference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is the best university in South Africa for driving meaningful change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is according to the 2024 Times Higher Education&nbsp;(THE) Impact Rankings, which evaluate 2,152 universities from 125 counties\/regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rankings are based on universities that excel across multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Not only do these institutions stand out in individual areas, but they also demonstrate comprehensive excellence in contributing to global sustainable development,&#8221; said THE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By excelling in a variety of SDGs, these universities showcase their commitment to addressing the world&#8217;s most pressing challenges, including environmental sustainability, social inclusion, economic growth and partnerships.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 17 SGDs are as follows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SDG 1 \u2013 no poverty <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 2 &#8211; zero hunger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 3 \u2013 good health and well-being<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 5 \u2013 gender equality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 6 \u2013 clean water and sanitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 8 \u2013 decent work and economic growth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 9 \u2013 industry, innovation and infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 10 \u2013 reduced inequalities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 11 \u2013 sustainable cities and communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 13 \u2013 climate action<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 14 \u2013 life below water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 15 \u2013 life on land<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 16 \u2013 peace, justice and strong institutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SDG 17 \u2013 partnerships for the goals <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>22% of overall scores are based on SDG 17 \u2013 partnerships for the goals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weight of the score reflects the university&#8217;s overall efforts in fostering robust international partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall ranking also considers the three highest scores for the other SGDs for each university, with each counting 26% towards the overall score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This approach highlights the universities\u2019 specialised strengths while also rewarding well-rounded contributions to the global SDG agenda,&#8221; said THE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UJ was the highest-ranked university in South Africa and joint 36th in the world, along with Durham University in the UK and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an overall score of 93.0, UJ jumped ten places in the global rankings from 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Pretoria was the second-highest-placed university in South Africa and 42nd overall.
