{"id":787247,"date":"2024-08-18T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=787247"},"modified":"2024-08-16T16:29:03","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T14:29:03","slug":"major-ai-fears-for-jobs-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/787247\/major-ai-fears-for-jobs-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Major AI fears for jobs in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Demand for AI skills is growing in South Africa, with many South Africans believing that they&#8217;ll require significant reskilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to CareerJunction&#8217;s new Employment Insights for Q2 2024, demand for AI skills has gradually but consistently increased over the last three years, rising by 94%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CareerJunction thus investigated job seeker trends better to understand AI skills in the South African workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last three years, there has been a 61% increase in job seekers with AI skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI skills in Machine Learning (ML), predictive modelling and artificial intelligence expertise are predominately found in job seekers with the following occupations:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data Analysis \/ Data Warehousing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Software Development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Systems \/ Network Administration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teaching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Breaking it down further, the following skill sets have shown a high adaptation to GenAI professions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Software Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Software engineering\/developing, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>machine learning,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>web developing, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>business developing (bi) skills, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>general (full stack) developing skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Systems \/ Network Administration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Systems engineering,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical IT skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Data Analysis \/ Data Warehousing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data science, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data analysis, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data engineering, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business intelligence analysis, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Machine learning,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quantitative analysis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Teaching<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lecturing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching assistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Global differences <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CareerJunction also supported its parent company, The Stepstone Group, in a study on how shifting trends in the Age of AI impact the global workforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The global study showed similar results to those in South Africa, with job seekers in IT and education leading the way in adapting to Gen AI:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"759\" height=\"606\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-787250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction-2.png 759w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction-2-300x240.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Stepstone Group\u2019s global study shows that South African job seekers are very conscious of the impact that Gen AI will have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa comes in ninth place regarding job seekers&#8217; perceptions of Gen AI&#8217;s significance in transforming their job roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 36% of South African job seekers said that GenAI would significantly impact their job role in the next five years and that they will require reskilling (green bars in the graphic below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya ranked number one in terms of being aware of GenAI&#8217;s impact. 46% of Kenyan job seekers said that GenAI will significantly impact the demand for their jobs and that upskilling will be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany was on the other end of the scale, with 10% of respondents thinking that GenAI would have a major impact on their job role within the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed countries, including Denmark, Ireland, and Austria, were far more likely to believe that their jobs would not require significant reskilling.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"885\" height=\"842\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-787251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction.png 885w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction-300x285.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/career-junction-768x731.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 885px) 100vw, 885px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>IT changes <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite their GenAI skills, there has been a continuous decrease in hiring for IT roles, with the sector seeing a 21% year-on-year drop in hiring activity in Q2 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, demand for IT professionals remains very high in the recruitment market.
