{"id":790517,"date":"2024-09-10T16:59:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T14:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=790517"},"modified":"2024-09-10T17:13:21","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T15:13:21","slug":"manufacturing-surprise-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/790517\/manufacturing-surprise-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Manufacturing surprise for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The latest manufacturing data is better than what analysts expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturing production increased by 1.7% in July 2024 compared to July 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This rebounded from the 5.5% contraction in June and exceeded the consensus forecast of a 0.7% increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following divisions made the largest positive contributions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food and beverages\u00a0(9.5% and contributing 2.0 percentage points); and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery (5.2% and contributing 1.1 percentage points).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The motor vehicles, parts and accessories, and other transport equipment division made the largest negative contribution (-12.1% and contributing -1.3 percentage points).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The automotive sector is down by 10.4% year-to-date, consistent with weak demand amid affordability challenges and a 15-year high interest rate environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production increased by 2.1% in July 2024 compared with June 2024. This followed month-on-month declines of 0.4% in June 2024 and 3.3% in May 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 0.5% in the three months ended July 2024 compared with the previous three months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven of the ten manufacturing divisions reported negative growth rates over the three months.\u00a0The largest negative contribution was reported for the\u00a0food and beverages\u00a0division (-1.1% and contributing -0.3 of a percentage point).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanda Sithole, FNB Senior Economist, said that the m\/m improvement aligns with the PMI business activity index, which increased from 36.3 in June to 50.8 in July. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data suggests a strong start to Q3 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, year-to-date (January to July), output remains lower by 0.4% compared to the same seven-month period last year, weighed on by weaker production in the automotive, bare iron and steel, and furniture divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-10-at-16.46.15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"292\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-10-at-16.46.15-1024x292.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-790518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-10-at-16.46.15-1024x292.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-10-at-16.46.15-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-10-at-16.46.15-768x219.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-10-at-16.46.15.png 1083w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Stats SA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The 0.4% year-to-date decline reflects challenging demand conditions due to weak consumer fundamentals and broad-based weakness in private sector fixed investment,&#8221; said Sithole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;However, a modest recovery is anticipated in the near term, although it will likely be uneven.
