{"id":792215,"date":"2024-09-25T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=792215"},"modified":"2024-09-25T09:34:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T07:34:45","slug":"ramaphosa-delivers-gnu-sales-pitch-to-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/792215\/ramaphosa-delivers-gnu-sales-pitch-to-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa delivers GNU sales pitch to the world"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa is leading a government delegation to the United States, using the trip to introduce the Government of National Unity (GNU) to world leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is also using the opportunity to sell South Africa&#8217;s renewed focus on economic recovery and structural reforms that are facilitating renewed crucial investment in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on 24 September for the first time since the formation of the GNU, Ramaphosa looked to convey a message of renewed optimism in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, democracy flourishes in South Africa\u2026 We have just held our seventh free and fair general elections since our democracy, paving the way for the formation of a Government of National Unity,&#8221; said Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ten political parties have coalesced around a common agenda for economic growth, job creation, poverty eradication and sustainable development.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is in a new era, an era of great promise,\u201d added the President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa told world leaders that the GNU was making \u201cheadway in resolving\u201d some of South Africa\u2019s most pressing challenges, which hampered cause for investment, such as inconsistent electricity supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur economy has started to improve, and investor confidence is on the rise. Our country\u2019s prospects look bright.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The formation of the \u201cbusiness-friendly\u201d GNU (a definition given by some economists for the inclusion of parties with more &#8216;free-market&#8217; policies) has ignited a wave of investment and positive sentiment about South Africa, signalling a reversal of years of economic stagnation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the coalition agreement in July, several businesses either invested further in South Africa or reversed plans to withdraw their investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aLJbqH1SFO\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/792024\/south-africa-goes-from-zero-to-hero\/\">South Africa goes from zero to hero<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;South Africa goes from zero to hero&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/792024\/south-africa-goes-from-zero-to-hero\/embed\/#?secret=kBWBwd0KrH#?secret=aLJbqH1SFO\" data-secret=\"aLJbqH1SFO\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was this exact message that Ramaphosa and the South African delegation sought to get across during the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the SA-US Interactive Business Forum in New York, Ramaphosa urged US businesses to enhance their investment ties with South Africa, emphasising the country&#8217;s economic recovery, structural reforms and the &#8216;progress made&#8217; by the GNU thus far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, bilateral trade between the US and South Africa hit $17.6 billion in 2022 \u2013 something that the country is looking to increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe advent of the Government of National Unity has renewed investor optimism in the South African economy. The message I bring to US investors today is that this optimism is well-placed,&#8221; said Ramaphosa on 23 September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is firmly on the road to recovery, and we invite you to be part of this journey. Investments in South Africa are secure. Our business environment is stable. This is supported by policy certainty and regulatory safeguards,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He announced the achievement of a R1.2 trillion investment target in South Africa ahead of schedule and set a new goal of R2 trillion by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa also noted the growing collaboration between the New York Stock Exchange and Johannesburg Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">South Africa is open for business!
