{"id":798777,"date":"2024-11-07T08:01:41","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T06:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=798777"},"modified":"2024-11-07T08:02:07","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T06:02:07","slug":"governments-plan-to-revive-crumbling-cities-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/798777\/governments-plan-to-revive-crumbling-cities-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Government&#8217;s plan to revive crumbling cities in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s government said it will, for the first time, ask private companies to help revive dilapidated buildings it owns in inner cities in the country\u2019s biggest urban centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government department that manages state assets has identified 16 state buildings in eThekwini \u2014 the municipality that includes the port city of Durban, the country\u2019s third-largest urban area \u2014 for revival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will soon publish requests for proposals on how to use the \u201cneglected\u201d properties to better serve residents, said Dean Macpherson, the minister of public works and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measure comes as concern builds about the fate of the central districts of cities such as Durban and Johannesburg, which have become bywords for urban dysfunction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In both centres, high rises and other buildings, many of them owned by the state, have been abandoned and taken over by squatters who are extorted by armed gangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government is the biggest owner of real estate in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe days of state buildings standing empty, attracting crime to communities and chasing away investment is coming to an end,\u201d Macpherson said in a speech in Durban on Wednesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe days of the state hanging onto properties it doesn\u2019t need &#8211; or is unable to maintain &#8211; is coming to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The buildings slated for refurbishment in the city of about four million people include the historic Seamen\u2019s Institute Building, which was built around 1900.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative, a first for the department, will be replicated across the country, said Macpherson, a member of the second-biggest party in the coalition that governs the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister, who represents the Democratic Alliance, was appointed to his post in June when a coalition government took office after 29 May elections failed to produce an outright winner.
