{"id":800141,"date":"2024-11-18T10:59:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T08:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=800141"},"modified":"2024-11-18T10:49:37","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T08:49:37","slug":"black-friday-blowout-expected-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/800141\/black-friday-blowout-expected-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Friday blowout expected in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of Africa&#8217;s largest diversified financial services groups, Absa, has reported a significant rise in the total value of e-commerce transactions over the past year \u2013 with signs pointing to peak around Black Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the bank&#8217;s data, total e-commerce turnover has increased 25% year-on-year in the first quarter, 16% year-on-year in the second quarter and 19% year-on-year in the third quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between the start of 2023 and the third quarter of 2024, the average value of e-commerce transactions increased from approximately R350 to R430. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, the average value of in-store retail transactions saw a modest decline, falling from around R350 to R340 over the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absa said that this data suggest that consumers are increasingly embracing the convenience, variety and efficiency of online shopping, which bodes well for retailers with an online presence ahead of Black Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve observed a shift towards higher online spending, with fewer but higher-value transactions indicating a preference for larger purchases online,\u201d said Chris Wood, Managing Executive for Product at Absa Relationship Banking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn physical stores, both total transaction numbers and turnover are growing steadily, though at a lower average ticket price, suggesting that consumers are making smaller, more frequent purchases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This trend aligns with general consumer behaviour in South Africa, where shoppers show confidence but are mindful of purchase sizes,&#8221; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Good news for Pick n Pay, Shoprite and other major retailers in South Africa&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/798855\/good-news-pick-n-pay-shoprite-and-other-major-retailers-in-south-africa\/embed\/#?secret=xRMCLMWYFJ#?secret=UJ6OZI0FPL\" data-secret=\"UJ6OZI0FPL\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another gamechanger for transactions has been the proliferation of the usage of digital wallets, which is also expected to peak towards the end of Black November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDigital wallet usage, especially among Absa customers who use Google Pay and Samsung Pay, has surged over the third quarter of 2024 with an average transaction value of around R320,\u201d said Tshipi Alexander, Executive for Card Issuing and Rewards at Absa Everyday Banking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The surge in transactions is not expected to drastically die down as Black November comes to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Absa said that it typically sees transaction volumes peak on Black Friday, recent history suggests that a significant portion of \u2018Black Friday\u2019 or \u2018Black November\u2019 spending still occurs on the Monday after Black Friday, also known as Cyber Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at Absa-issued cards, average transactions per second peaked at 61 on Black Friday last year, dropping slightly to 57 per second on Saturday, and reaching 43 on Cyber Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith Absa Rewards now free, customers are expected to maximise this benefit this Black November,\u201d said Alexander. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDepending on their Rewards Tier, Absa Rewards members will receive up to 100% in real cash back during the Black Friday period [and] customers who join Absa Rewards over this period will also be eligible for the offer,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lookout for scams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an anticipated surge in spending, this comes alongside the likelihood of scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zZjm8i1AA9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/black-friday\/795592\/black-friday-fraud-warning\/\">Black Friday scam alert for South Africa<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Black Friday scam alert for South Africa&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/black-friday\/795592\/black-friday-fraud-warning\/embed\/#?secret=z03kFkq8oq#?secret=zZjm8i1AA9\" data-secret=\"zZjm8i1AA9\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Absa said that in anticipation of the surge in transaction volumes during Black Friday and Black November, it has implemented a range of measures and its advanced fraud prevention capabilities will be on heightened alert during this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is &#8220;to bolster the resilience and capacity of its payments acceptance infrastructure, including infrastructure scaling, enhanced system monitoring and support, fraud prevention and security measures.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will monitor for suspicious activities and contact our customers where we identify transactions that may be fraudulent,\u201d said Alexander. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to remain vigilant and only approve transactions you have initiated. Read the authorisation notification carefully and confirm that the merchant name and transaction amount match the transaction you intend to conclude. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Also ensure you have your transaction notification service activated.
