In a message sent to users, the call blocker said that the holiday season is a time when scammers are on the prowl, taking advantage of the festive spirit to target unsuspecting victims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It thus explored some of the most common types of phone scams that occur around the holiday season and provided someone with tips on how to protect themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gift Card Scams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n “During the holiday season, scammers often pose as representatives from popular retail or tech companies, claiming that you’ve won a gift card or a special prize,” said Truecaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “They ask for your personal information or request payment to claim your prize. Remember, legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive information or payment over the phone.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n It advises users to be cautious and verify the legitimacy of the call by contacting the company directly through their official website or customer service number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Charity Scams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Scammers can also often exploit people’s kindness during the holiday season by pretending to represent a charitable organisation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They will call asking for donations, stating that the funds will go to help the less fortunate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “While it’s wonderful to give, it’s important to verify the charity before making any contributions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Research the charity online, check their official website, and consider donating directly through their secure website instead of over the phone.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Package Delivery Scams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n With online shopping peaking during the holiday season, scammers will also often pose as delivery companies, claiming that they couldn’t deliver a package to your address. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They will ask for personal information or request payment for redelivery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “Always double-check the delivery status of your packages through the official courier company’s website or app.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Use the tracking number provided by the retailer to monitor your package’s status and contact the delivery company directly if you have concerns about a delivery.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n Tech Support Scams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Although tech support scams are common throughout the year, scammers often increase their efforts during the holidays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They will call claiming to be from reputable tech companies, stating that your computer has a virus or a security issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n These scammers try and gain remote access to your computer or extract payment for unnecessary services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Never give control of your computer to someone who contacts you unsolicited. Legitimate tech companies will not call you unless you have requested assistance.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n “By staying informed and cautious, you can enjoy the holidays without falling victim to scams.
