Remember, legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive information or payment over the phone.”

It advises users to be cautious and verify the legitimacy of the call by contacting the company directly through their official website or customer service number.

Charity Scams

Scammers can also often exploit people’s kindness during the holiday season by pretending to represent a charitable organisation.

They will call asking for donations, stating that the funds will go to help the less fortunate.

“While it’s wonderful to give, it’s important to verify the charity before making any contributions.”

“Research the charity online, check their official website, and consider donating directly through their secure website instead of over the phone.”

Package Delivery Scams

With online shopping peaking during the holiday season, scammers will also often pose as delivery companies, claiming that they couldn’t deliver a package to your address.

They will ask for personal information or request payment for redelivery.

“Always double-check the delivery status of your packages through the official courier company’s website or app.”

“Use the tracking number provided by the retailer to monitor your package’s status and contact the delivery company directly if you have concerns about a delivery.”

Tech Support Scams

Although tech support scams are common throughout the year, scammers often increase their efforts during the holidays.

They will call claiming to be from reputable tech companies, stating that your computer has a virus or a security issue.

These scammers try and gain remote access to your computer or extract payment for unnecessary services.

“Never give control of your computer to someone who contacts you unsolicited. Legitimate tech companies will not call you unless you have requested assistance.”

“By staying informed and cautious, you can enjoy the holidays without falling victim to scams. Stay safe, and happy holidays.”

Read: Social unrest warning over Eskom price hikes in South Africa

Truecaller has highlighted some of the common phone scams which are prominent during the festive season.

[9878
26,11927
post-803560","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-technology","tag-headline","tag-truecaller
["GET
