{"id":807592,"date":"2025-01-20T10:25:28","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T08:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=807592"},"modified":"2025-01-21T12:34:41","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T10:34:41","slug":"one-of-south-africas-biggest-competitors-joins-brics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/807592\/one-of-south-africas-biggest-competitors-joins-brics\/","title":{"rendered":"One of South Africa&#8217;s biggest competitors joins BRICS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nigeria\u2014once the GDP king of Africa\u2014has become a partner state of the BRICS group of emerging-market powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BRICS, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has been pushing to expand in recent years as it grows in clout and has accepted other countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia and United Arab Emirates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group also has a number of partner states, including Malaysia and Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The enlarged alliance may challenge the dollar\u2019s dominance in oil and gas trading and become a stronger counterweight to the Group of Seven industrialized nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s acceptance in the group was communicated in a statement on Saturday by the acting spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Federal Government of Nigeria has accepted the invitation to join BRICS as a partner country.
