{"id":810608,"date":"2025-02-10T21:25:50","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T19:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=810608"},"modified":"2025-02-10T21:25:57","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T19:25:57","slug":"south-africa-under-siege","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/810608\/south-africa-under-siege\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa under siege"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s new expropriation without compensation law and race-based business policies have made it a target of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United States President Donald Trump has taken a firm stance against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump and the influential people around him, including Elon Musk, view these initiatives as divisive and contrary to merit-based principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first things he did after taking office on 20 January 2025 was to issue executive orders to dismantle DEI programs across federal agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It did not take long before South Africa, known for its race-based policies like Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Affirmative Action, became a target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 3 February 2025, Trump said he would cut off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation into taking land from certain people has been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is confiscating land and treating certain classes of people very badly,\u201d Trump said on his Truth Social network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump called it a \u201cmassive human rights violation, at a minimum\u201d, saying it is happening for all to see. \u201cThe United States won\u2019t stand for it. We will act,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His comments came shortly after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the controversial Expropriation Bill into law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill outlines how state organs can expropriate land in the public interest, which includes expropriation without compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa responded to Trump\u2019s allegations, saying the South African government has not confiscated any land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is a constitutional democracy deeply rooted in the rule of law, justice, and equality,\u201d Ramaphosa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the Expropriation Act is a constitutionally mandated legal process that ensures public access to land in an equitable and just manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Elon Musk responded, asking Ramaphosa why South Africa has \u201copenly racist ownership laws\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk was referring to black empowerment laws that differentiate on race regarding business policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa spoke with Musk on \u201cmisinformation and distortions about South Africa\u201d. However, the United States\u2019 stance has not changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Donald Trump&#8217;s executive order against South Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, 7 February 2025,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/addressing-egregious-actions-of-the-republic-of-south-africa\/\">Trump signed an executive order<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;formalising his earlier announcement that he would freeze assistance to South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House criticised the recently signed expropriation without compensation Act, which opens the door for the state to take land without paying for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It argued the law amounts to discrimination against the white minority population. \u201cThe government of South Africa blatantly discriminates against ethnic minority Afrikaners,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump said the law follows countless government policies designed to dismantle equal opportunity in employment, education, and business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also criticised hateful rhetoric and government actions fuelling disproportionate violence against racially disfavoured landowners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House added that South Africa continues to support bad actors on the world stage and allows violent attacks on innocent, disfavoured minority farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said the United States would stop aid and assistance to the country until this behaviour stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House added that Trump is going to announce a program to resettle Afrikaners, including farmers and their families, as refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security shall take appropriate steps, consistent with law, to prioritize humanitarian relief,\u201d the order said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It includes admission and resettlement through the United States Refugee Admissions Program for Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other United States politicians weigh in on South Africa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Joel Pollak, the frontrunner to become the United States\u2019 Ambassador to South Africa, also slated South Africa\u2019s transformation policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pollak said South Africa has adopted economic and foreign policies that are not aligned with Western norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that race-based policies, like black economic empowerment, are a problem for investors and opposed to what the United States is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that the United States has no appetite for racial policies in investment or anywhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pollak added that South Africa focuses on redressing the past instead of building a better future. \u201cThe world is tired of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pollak said Trump wanted to see those policies changed and would play hardball to see it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many stakeholders expected South Africa and the United States to use the G20 Summit in Johannesburg as a platform to mend relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this was dealt a blow after the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said he wouldn\u2019t attend the G20 in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rubio cited South Africa\u2019s new land-expropriation law as one of the many reasons why he is snubbing the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is doing very bad things. Expropriating private property.
