{"id":810908,"date":"2025-02-08T08:03:58","date_gmt":"2025-02-08T06:03:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=810908"},"modified":"2025-02-08T08:04:04","modified_gmt":"2025-02-08T06:04:04","slug":"the-usa-plans-to-open-the-door-for-white-south-african-farmers-and-their-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/810908\/the-usa-plans-to-open-the-door-for-white-south-african-farmers-and-their-families\/","title":{"rendered":"The USA plans to open the door for white South African farmers and their families"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order outlining plans for the resettlement of white South African farmers and their families in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House has stated that efforts will be made to prioritise their admission through the United States Refugee Admissions Program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These farmers, primarily Afrikaners of Dutch and French descent, have been the focus of political controversy, with Trump and other figures framing their situation as a human rights crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the relocation plan, Trump has also followed through on his warning to South Africa by freezing financial aid to the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision marks a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Pretoria, stemming from South Africa\u2019s land reform policies and its international stance against Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has justified his action by citing South Africa\u2019s recently enacted Expropriation Bill, which allows for the redistribution of land in the public interest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has repeatedly claimed that the South African government is \u201cconfiscating land\u201d and that \u201ccertain classes of people\u201d are being treated unfairly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House has also linked the decision to South Africa\u2019s role in bringing a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing the country of genocide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the executive order, the US \u201ccannot support the government of South Africa\u2019s commission of rights violations in its country\u201d and will withhold assistance \u201cas long as it continues these unjust and immoral practices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement has sparked strong reactions from both supporters and critics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other influential people in the Trump Administration, including Elon Musk and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also criticised South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rubio cited South Africa\u2019s new land expropriation law as one of the many reasons why he is snubbing the G20 being hosted in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is doing very bad things and expropriating private property. Using G20 to promote solidarity, equality, and sustainability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TRUMP-executive-order.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TRUMP-executive-order-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-810911\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TRUMP-executive-order-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TRUMP-executive-order-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TRUMP-executive-order-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TRUMP-executive-order.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk slated Ramaphosa for defending \u201copenly racist ownership laws\u201d, referring to black empowerment laws that differentiate on race regarding business policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s decision to cut funding follows his statements on social media, where he accused the South African government of engaging in \u201ca massive human rights violation.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He claimed that these actions were being ignored by the mainstream media and vowed that the United States \u201cwon\u2019t stand for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The South African government, however, has rejected these accusations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s office issued a statement reaffirming that South Africa remains a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement clarified that the Expropriation Bill does not constitute land confiscation but instead provides a legal framework for land redistribution in a manner that is fair and in line with constitutional principles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government further emphasised that land reform is essential to addressing historical inequalities and fostering economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill outlines the process by which the state can acquire land for public purposes, with provisions ensuring that compensation is just and equitable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While critics argue that it could pave the way for expropriation without compensation, supporters maintain that it is a necessary tool for economic transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramaphosa doubled down on his stance during his \u00a0State of the Nation Address (SoNA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President told South Africans, \u201cWe will not be bullied.
