{"id":816139,"date":"2025-03-11T09:44:51","date_gmt":"2025-03-11T07:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=816139"},"modified":"2025-03-11T09:44:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-11T07:44:57","slug":"social-unrest-warning-for-south-africa-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/816139\/social-unrest-warning-for-south-africa-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Social unrest warning for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has threatened country-wide protests if the revised budget\u2014which will be presented this week on Wednesday (12 March)\u2014raises value-added tax (VAT). \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the initial budget proposal, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana suggested a two-percentage-point increase in Value Added Tax (VAT), among other measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This proposal faced significant opposition from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and other political parties, leading to an unprecedented last-minute cancellation of the February budget speech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Godongwana aimed to implement the VAT increase to raise R60 billion to pay for the government&#8217;s critical expenditures this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include salary increases for civil servants, infrastructure projects, school feeding programs, early childhood development initiatives, and an extension of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Godongwana, an additional R35.2 billion in funding is required to extend the SRD grant until March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sunday Times reported that the government of national unity (GNU) clearing house had agreed to a smaller VAT hike of 0.5%pts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, following the report, the DA said that no agreement had been reached and that negotiations were still ongoing because the ANC had not accepted any of the DA&#8217;s terms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it stands, Godongwana is still expected to present the revised budget to the nation on Wednesday (12 March).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the risks of hiking VAT have now worsened, as the MK Party has threatened nationwide protests if any increase is budgeted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MK Party parliamentary whip Mzwanele Manyi warned that <strong>South Africa &#8220;would be brought to a standstill if the government proceeds with a proposed increase in value-added tax (VAT).<\/strong>&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The party argues that such a move would place an unbearable burden on the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5yEuZgUKmWk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newzroom Afrika<\/a><\/strong>, the party\u2019s National High Command Economic Transformation Sub-Committee chairperson, Thanti Mthanti, said the tax hike would worsen inequality and economic hardship for millions of low-income households.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/National-High-Command-Economic-Transformation-Sub-Committee-chairperson-Thanti-Mthanti.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/National-High-Command-Economic-Transformation-Sub-Committee-chairperson-Thanti-Mthanti-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-816173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/National-High-Command-Economic-Transformation-Sub-Committee-chairperson-Thanti-Mthanti-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/National-High-Command-Economic-Transformation-Sub-Committee-chairperson-Thanti-Mthanti-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/National-High-Command-Economic-Transformation-Sub-Committee-chairperson-Thanti-Mthanti-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/National-High-Command-Economic-Transformation-Sub-Committee-chairperson-Thanti-Mthanti.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>MK Party National High Command Economic Transformation Sub-Committee chairperson Thanti Mthanti.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis targets poor people,\u201d Mthanti said. \u201cThe minimum wage in this country is about R4,500, and most of that is spent on transport and food.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mthanti dismissed the Finance Minister\u2019s justification that the increase is necessary to fund the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, calling it \u201ca self-serving argument based on incompetence.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He argued that the grant was already budgeted for and that the Treasury was using the issue to play political games and shift the burden onto vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe additional expenditure he&#8217;s looking to fund has nothing to do with the SRD grant,\u201d he said. \u201cTreasury has been trying to push the cancellation of the SRD grant \u2014 it&#8217;s just a political manoeuvre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mthanti said South Africa does not have a spending crisis but a growth crisis, and the solution lies in boosting economic expansion, not cutting income for the poor. \u201cIf the South African economy had grown at 3%, we\u2019d have no fiscal crisis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He echoed Manyi&#8217;s warning and said that if the VAT hike is implemented, the MK Party will mobilise mass protests to bring the country to a halt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MK Party said the government could raise money to fund the budget without increasing VAT. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has proposed raising the corporate tax by one percentage point, introducing a wealth tax for the top 1% of earners, and capacitating the South African Revenue Service (SARS) so it can decrease its R800 billion tax gap. &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Opposition parties have threatened to &#8220;bring South Africa to a standstill&#8221;
