Insiders say his comments were a major own goal and are indefensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/citypress\/politics\/rasool-thrown-under-the-bus-officials-say-he-crossed-the-line-20250316\"><strong>City Press<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/sunday-times\/news\/politics\/2025-03-16-he-crossed-a-line-that-we-cant-defend-ebrahim-rasools-own-goal\/\"><strong>Sunday Times<\/strong><\/a>, there is a view in government that Rasool&#8217;s comments on US President Donald Trump, which spurred the expulsion, crossed the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pronounced late Friday that Rasool was &#8220;persona non grata&#8221; and no longer welcome in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This followed an address by the ambassador this week at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J1ILz1S_AdQ&amp;ab_channel=MISTRASouthAfrica\">Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection<\/a>\u00a0(MISTRA) where he accused Trump of running a global white supremacist movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also noted that the Trump administration&#8217;s focus on white Afrikaners in recent months is a part of this movement, with the aim of perpetuating the idea of white victimhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MISTRA attempted to clarify the context of the address after the fallout, saying that the speakers were engaging in an intellectual debate on changes in the United States and how this impacts South Africa and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his address, Rasool said that Trump and the so-called MAGA movement (Make America Great Again) were pursuing a \u201csupremacist assault on incumbency\u201d, saying that this was a \u201csupremacist instinct\u201d response to changing demographics in the USA and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rasool said that the Trump administration\u2019s focus on Afrikaners was to paint white people as being victims or embattled, which would serve as a \u201cdog whistle\u201d to mobilise a \u201cglobal white base\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost that they are pitting a supremacist insurgency against the incumbency,\u201d Rasool said, adding that it was an intra-party (Republican vs Republican), national and international \u201cinsurgency\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s forcing critical transitions in the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rasool went on to say that Trump\u2019s administration has broken all the previous rules of engagement and has taken a \u201cshock and awe\u201d approach to diplomacy, wielding the United States\u2019 economic power to exert pressure through \u201cpunitive coercion\u201d instead of \u201crules-based\u201d duress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard impunity. In-your-face impunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he also stressed the need to diplomatically engage with the United States in this new context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Ebrahim-Rasool.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Ebrahim-Rasool-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-817068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Ebrahim-Rasool-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Ebrahim-Rasool-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Ebrahim-Rasool-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Ebrahim-Rasool.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">South African Ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Government insiders told the publications that Rasool had scored an &#8220;own goal&#8221; and that what he said was problematic and counter to the country&#8217;s goal of mending relations with the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain protocols must be followed by a diplomat on foreign soil, and political accusations should be kept quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said an ambassador is not a political analyst.
