{"id":817113,"date":"2025-03-16T18:48:43","date_gmt":"2025-03-16T16:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=817113"},"modified":"2025-03-16T18:49:28","modified_gmt":"2025-03-16T16:49:28","slug":"new-spar-gourmet-stores-rolling-out-across-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/817113\/new-spar-gourmet-stores-rolling-out-across-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"New high-end Spar Gourmet stores rolling out across South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Spar and Checkers are rolling out high-end grocery stores to serve affluent customers and compete with Woolworths Food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Spar Southern Africa chief executive Max Oliva revealed that the company will roll out 30 to 40 high-end grocery stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first high-end Spar store, which targets affluent shoppers, is set to open in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Spar Gourmet stores will target South Africans in the level 7 to 10 Socio Economic Measures (SEM) group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This group is defined as having high access to resources, infrastructure, and amenities. Simply put, these are wealthy South Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliva said the retailer is looking at sites in high-end residential and urban neighbourhoods to access this market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spar wants to give South Africans a reason to shop by offering high-end products through key strategic partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Spar Gourmet stores will offer a standardised design and brand philosophy, which the group anticipates will allow for a high-margin retail model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the Private Label Spar Signature Selection range and strategic supplier partners, it will offer differentiated product ranges and bespoke offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will offer a fresh arena implementation and a product range and assortment specifically targeting wealthy South Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliva said Spar\u2019s Private Label Spar Signature Selection will play a big role in the new Gourmet stores strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He highlighted that private labels are increasingly popular globally. 35% of all groceries sold in Europe and 23% in the United States are private label products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said these products offer a competitive edge with numerous advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Affordability<\/strong> &#8211; Value has become increasingly important for consumers squeezed by cost-of-living pressures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Profitability<\/strong> \u2013 Retailers have vertically integrated their procurement to enhance retail margins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Quality<\/strong> &#8211; Private label products now share comparable quality to propriety brands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Innovation<\/strong> \u2013 Private label product innovation and speed to shelf is quicker than propriety brands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Availability<\/strong> \u2013 Retailers now control their own supply chains, allowing them to forecast and predict their own requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Point of difference<\/strong> &#8211; Retailers using private labels as their point of difference create demand for their own products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur private label branding is built around the \u2018as good as the best for less\u2019 promise and a \u2018double your money back guarantee\u2019,\u201d Oliva said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that Spar guarantees quality that meets or exceeds national brand standards to ensure client satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Private Label Spar Signature Selection
