{"id":818563,"date":"2025-03-28T09:26:39","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T07:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=818563"},"modified":"2025-03-28T09:26:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T07:26:47","slug":"worry-over-south-africas-empty-oil-reserves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/818563\/worry-over-south-africas-empty-oil-reserves\/","title":{"rendered":"Worry over South Africa&#8217;s empty oil reserves"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South African lawmakers said they\u2019re concerned about \u201cinsufficient\u201d strategic oil stockpiles after visiting a government-owned crude-storage hub. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Strategic Fuel Fund manages the Saldanha Bay crude terminal with six in-ground tanks capable of holding as much as 45 million barrels, enough to fill more than 20 large tankers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parliament\u2019s Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources raised questions after it found much of that storage is empty.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are not satisfied with the amount of strategic fuel reserves that the SFF is keeping in stock,\u201d Mikateko Mahlaule, the committee chairperson, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.gov.za\/press-releases\/media-statement-strategic-fuel-funds-petroleum-reserves-concern-mineral-and-petroleum-resources-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe it is pointless to refine if we do not have sufficient storage or if the limited storage available is not optimally utilized.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue emerges after a decade of the government reducing strategic crude supplies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa was\u00a0still selling\u00a0some of these reserves in November in order to fund measures introduced in 2022 to cushion consumers from a spike in road-fuel prices through a subsidy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SFF issued at least one tender last year to sell 3.5 million barrels of Iraqi Basrah Light crude.
