{"id":820787,"date":"2025-04-14T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T06:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=820787"},"modified":"2025-04-14T08:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T06:42:09","slug":"goodbye-eskom-big-electricity-changes-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/820787\/goodbye-eskom-big-electricity-changes-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye Eskom &#8211; big electricity changes coming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa is on the cusp of starting a traded electricity market that will give consumers a choice of power products along with a range of pricing options, according to a top investment bank.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa\u2019s most industrialized economy has relied on state-owned Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. for the bulk of its electricity supply for more than a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mismanagement and underinvestment at the utility led to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-10-31\/eskom-loss-widens-to-1-2-billion-after-record-s-africa-outages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">record outages<\/a>\u00a0in 2023, causing government to allow private companies to build power plants of any size to meet their own needs and to sell to the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the country has opened the market to licensed traders, an area FirstRand Ltd. unit Rand Merchant Bank is backing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the beginning of a traded electricity market in South Africa,\u201d Judy Kobus, head of infrastructure sector solutions at RMB, which is providing financing solutions to traders, said in an interview in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s energy regulator has so far licensed 10 traders, who will create a market-orientated pricing structure that will allow consumers to choose their own electricity supplier based on price. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nersa.org.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/bsk-pdf-manager\/2024\/11\/Media-Statement-Energy-Regulator-Decisions-of-Meeting-285-held-on-29-October-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are<\/a>\u00a0closely held Green Electron Market, Discovery Green, CBI Electric Apollo and Africa GreenCo, as well as Eskom\u2019s own National Transmission Co. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RMB also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmb.co.za\/news\/rmb-africas-transition-partner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expects<\/a>\u00a0the move to reduce the cost of energy. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crses.sun.ac.za\/sa-energy-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electricity prices<\/a>&nbsp;in South Africa increased more than eightfold between 2008 and 2023, data from the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University near Cape Town shows. Inflation over that period was 215%, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RMB\u2019s Infrastructure Sector Solutions, which facilitated R40 billion of renewable energy projects in its last financial year, also plans to invest in upgrades to the grid to boost connection capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s constrained transmission network has limited the number of renewable power plants that can be built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve engaged with government\u201d and clients on \u201cwhat this transmission rollout might look like, what type of support might be required,\u201d said Kobus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are also crowding in international players who are very experienced on the technical side of transmission lines and so forth, and looking to bolster the capacity that the country has.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government is looking for investors to help build 1,164 kilometers (723 miles) of transmission lines in a pilot phase as part of a bigger project that will see the rollout of 14,218 kilometers of power lines over the next decade at a cost of more than R440 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RMB division is also planning to invest in South Africa\u2019s dilapidated freight-rail lines by supporting the procurement of rolling stock and financing the concessioning, Kobus said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s coalition government is seeking as much as R3.2 trillion from the private sector by 2030 to help upgrade roads, ports and other infrastructure to expand the economy that\u2019s grown at less than 1% a year on average for more than a decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of South Africa, RMB is eyeing a broad range of deals. In the past year, it closed airport transactions in Senegal and Ghana and railway deals in Nigeria and Tanzania.
