{"id":820959,"date":"2025-04-15T08:14:47","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T06:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=820959"},"modified":"2025-04-15T08:14:53","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T06:14:53","slug":"south-africa-faces-crippling-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/820959\/south-africa-faces-crippling-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa faces crippling strike"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s state-owned ports and freight rail company\u2019s biggest union threatened strike action after wage talks collapsed, a move that may curb shipments of minerals and agricultural goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe United National Transport Union and Transnet have officially reached a deadlock in the 2025-26 salary and wage negotiations following a failed conciliation process by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration,\u201d the union said Monday in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNTU, which represents more than half of the 46,000 employees at the company, said it rejected Transnet\u2019s unchanged offer for a wage increase of 6% annually in the first two years starting April 1, and 5.5% in the third year. The union wants a 10% increase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTransnet remains optimistic about concluding this process while it continues the business of turning the company around for the benefit of the company and the South African economy,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strike would be a blow to South Africa\u2019s moribund economy, at a time when US President Donald Trump\u2019s universal tariffs are threatening to upend global trade. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A previous strike in 2022 was estimated by the Minerals Council South Africa to have cost mining companies about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-19\/south-african-union-satawu-calls-off-transnet-strike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R815 million<\/a> a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fraying utilities\u2019 rail and ports facilities are key to South African exports of bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore as well as agriculture products including citrus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CCMA commissioner will issue a certificate of non-resolution, legally enabling UNTU to commence with industrial action, the union said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe time has come to mobilize.
