{"id":8224,"date":"2012-03-23T10:14:29","date_gmt":"2012-03-23T08:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=8224"},"modified":"2013-02-25T12:08:39","modified_gmt":"2013-02-25T10:08:39","slug":"extended-fnb-banking-hours-after-downtime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/8224\/extended-fnb-banking-hours-after-downtime\/","title":{"rendered":"Extended FNB banking hours after downtime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307757-FNB-First-National-Bank\" target=\"_blank\">FNB<\/a> CEO, <a title=\"Person Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/399571-Michael-Jordaan\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Jordaan<\/a> apologized for the delays and unavailability of banking services over the last two days.<\/p>\n<p>Jordaan said in an email to customers that the bank experienced a \u201cmassive power surge&#8221; in its data centre on Tuesday, 20 March 2012, which resulted in the interruption of its banking systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndications suggest that this surge was in the range of 12,000 kVA, which is equivalent to eight times the strength of a typical lightning strike,\u201d said Jordaan.<\/p>\n<p>Jordaan explained that FNB regularly tests the integrity of its banking infrastructure, but that this scenario was so severe and unprecedented, that it could not have been foreseen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the course of the evening of 20 March 2012, banking services were progressively restored from 21h00 onwards,\u201d said Jordaan.<\/p>\n<p>More problems were experienced on Thursday which Jordaan said were as a result of \u201clatent problems resulting from the massive power surge\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo maintain the availability and prevent any further loss of our banking services, we moved to our alternate back-up systems,\u201d said Jordaan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pleased to confirm that all our systems are now up and fully operational.
