{"id":822706,"date":"2025-04-30T12:12:02","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T10:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=822706"},"modified":"2025-04-30T12:12:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T10:12:02","slug":"massive-american-company-being-liquidated-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/822706\/massive-american-company-being-liquidated-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Massive American company being liquidated in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A massive plastic plant is going under the hammer, and stems from the liquidation of Tupperware Southern Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Florida-based container brand Tupperware announced it would exit South Africa in 2024 as part of a larger liquidation and restructuring strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2024 due to declining sales and worsening financial circumstances.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regulatory filings showed that the brand&#8217;s new owners would focus on eight core markets, which exclude South Africa and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tupperware was so popular that it became synonymous with all forms of plastic containers. Other popular brands that became placeholders for a product include Jacuzzis, Jet Skis and Frisbees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the local liquidation, Park Village Auctions (PVA) has invited offers to purchase a significant plastic manufacturing and distribution plant with movable assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is a unique opportunity to acquire a substantial facility with a comprehensive plant and equipment inventory,&#8221; says PVA&#8217;s Werner Burger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The scale of the operation and assets offered due to the liquidation of a globally recognised entity like Tupperware Southern Africa make this an attractive proposition for various potential buyers.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The immovable property comprises Erf 141, Vulcania Ext 2, 92 Lemmer Road, Brakpan, measuring 4.1573 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The property features a large warehouse divided into four sections, a double-storey office building, a security office, a health and safety office, and a covered staff parking area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total gross leasable area (GLA) of the property is 22,747 sqm, and a wide array of movable assets, including a complete plastic manufacturing and distribution plant, are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key equipment includes the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A recycling extruder (Nelmor Thermoflite 45 mm barrel, with spaghetti die, cooling tank, and pelletiser)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Granulators (Rapid 300 with dust extractor and cyclone, and Nelmor G16 with dust extractor and cyclone)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seven Matan granule dryers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An Engel Duo 500 (C06) injection moulder with Viper 40 robot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two heated tempering tunnels (5m long x 1.2m wide)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two Viper 40 robots,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Future Packaging shrink tunnel (Type AP-180072)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four Busch vacuum pumps with an AZO hopper dryer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conveyor systems throughout the factory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A side blow moulder (Type 1002E) with 150 kVA servo motor control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two pallet wrappers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Demag 10-ton double girder overhead crane (27m span)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maha MH500 and TOS SUI 50A lathe machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Packaging lines, roller conveyors, and belt conveyors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atlas Copco GA55 and ABC compressors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A water chiller with a heat exchanger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storage shelving and racking (such as 650 modules of HD racking)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raw material<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warehouse equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Furniture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Office equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Offers can be submitted to PVA by no later than 14:00 on Thursday, 15 May, with viewing open from 9:00 to 15:00 on the 6, 7 and 8 May at 92 Lemmer Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International companies call it quits in South Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Tupperware-factory-scaled-e1746005408646.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Tupperware-factory-scaled-e1746005408646-1024x577.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-822715\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Tupperware-factory-scaled-e1746005408646-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Tupperware-factory-scaled-e1746005408646-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Tupperware-factory-scaled-e1746005408646-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Tupperware-factory-scaled-e1746005408646.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tupperware Factory in Brakpan<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Tupperware&#8217;s decision to exit South Africa joined a long list of international companies that announced plans to exit or scale back their operations in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French-based BNP Paribas stopped operating as a bank in South Africa. The sixth-largest bank in the world scaled back in Africa to focus on Europe and Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reaching an agreement, UK-based HSBC also announced that it would transfer the business of its South African branch to FirstRand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shell also announced its plan to sell its downstream business, which includes its forecourts across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/821435\/new-owners-lined-up-for-shell-petrol-stations-in-south-africa\/\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported that Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and Swiss commodities trading firm Gunvor are shortlisted to take over the downstream business of Shell, which intends to keep its upstream business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK-based Britbox, a streaming service operated by the BBC and ITV, stopped operating in August. The company noted that many of the channels are already available on DStv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding retailers, Jumia Technologies, which operated Zando in South Africa, exited the country amid intense competition.
