{"id":82559,"date":"2015-03-15T08:22:37","date_gmt":"2015-03-15T06:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=82559"},"modified":"2015-03-15T23:13:17","modified_gmt":"2015-03-15T21:13:17","slug":"r500-million-multichoice-deal-behind-sabc-purge-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/82559\/r500-million-multichoice-deal-behind-sabc-purge-report\/","title":{"rendered":"R500-million Multichoice deal behind SABC &#8220;purge&#8221;: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A controversial deal between the SABC and Multichoice is said to be the cause of a recent spate of exits on the public broadcaster&#8217;s board, The Sunday Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper, several SABC board members are in the crosshairs for opposing the controversial R500-million deal with Multichoice.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the paper mentions Hope Zinde, who was given the boot this week after she reportedly clashed with acting board chairman, Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, over the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Other members cited by &#8220;insiders&#8221;, the Sunday Times said, include Rachel Kalidass, Krish Naidoo, Dr Aaron Tshidzumba and Vuyo Mhlakaza.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday (12 March) it was reported that the SABC board passed a vote of no confidence in Zinde, a non-executive director, and removed her from the post.<\/p>\n<p>The board had met to discuss the conduct of some of its members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe allegations levelled against them include\u2026 fraudulent conduct, raising matters of the board externally without a mandate and non-disclosure of conflict of interest,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The contract in question is between Multichoice and the SABC to provide a 24 hour news channel on the DStv pay-tv service.<\/p>\n<p>The deal also put the SABC on MultiChoice&#8217;s side on the set top box control saga, which has <a title=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/108548-namec-set-top-box-battle.html\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/108548-namec-set-top-box-battle.html\">drawn criticism and debate from all sectors<\/a>\u00a0involved in the much-delayed digital migration.<\/p>\n<p>The deal \u2013 which includes controversial clauses on access control and broadcasting rights \u2013 was approved by an interim board and disgraced former minister of communications, Dina Pule, and signed by COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng.<\/p>\n<p>According the Sunday Times&#8217;
