It’s a question many of us have asked ourselves when picking up a bar of chocolate off the store shelf: Am I getting the weight that is promised on the packaging?<\/p>\n
We decided to\u00a0answer that question by purchasing\u00a0a food scale, a few hundred rand’s worth of bars, slabs, and boxes of chocolate, and putting promises from brands like Cadbury’s, Beacon, and Nestl\u00e9 to the test.<\/p>\n
To conduct the test, each chocolate’s stated package weight was recorded, after which it was taken out of its wrapper and weighed.<\/p>\n
The actual weight was noted, and a percentage difference between stated and actual weight calculated.<\/p>\n
All the chocolates were opened over a plastic container placed on our food scale to ensure no bits of the bar or slab were lost.<\/p>\n
The container was cleaned after each measurement to avoid the weights being affected by any leftover chocolate from the previous measurement.<\/p>\n
