{"id":830216,"date":"2025-07-03T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=830216"},"modified":"2025-07-03T12:52:56","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T10:52:56","slug":"major-banks-closing-atms-across-south-africa-except-for-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/830216\/major-banks-closing-atms-across-south-africa-except-for-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Major banks closing ATMs across South Africa, except for one"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Capitec continues expanding its ATM network across South Africa, while its competitors continue to cut back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to journalists ahead of his imminent retirement, Capitec CEO Gerrie Fourie said that South Africa&#8217;s largest bank by customer numbers will add 800 new ATMs across South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fourie said that Capitec&#8217;s strategy stands in contrast with that of many of its younger competitors, such as TymeBank, Discovery Bank, and Bank Zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These new challenger banks do not have ATMs and use existing infrastructure at other banks and retailers to give customers access to cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move to expand its ATM network is also in contrast to the traditional &#8220;Big Four&#8221; retail banks\u2014FNB, Standard Bank, Absa and Nedbank\u2014that have been slowly cutting back on their ATM network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent assessment by <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/599430-south-africas-big-banks-closing-atms-across-the-country.html\">MyBroadband<\/a> showed that the number of ATMs operated by the Big Four banks dropped by over 8,000 over the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard Bank\u2019s total number of ATMs dropped by 3,759 to 5,562, Absa&#8217;s by 3,518 to 5,138, FNB&#8217;s by 1,010 to 4,770 and Nedbank&#8217;s by 58 to 4,199.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data showed that Capitec is the only large bank growing its ATM network, increasing from 5,011 in 2019 to 8,798 in the latest figures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/821642\/big-banks-closing-atms-across-south-africa\/\">A recent study by Merchant Machine<\/a> revealed that ATM numbers have significantly reduced in several countries, including South Africa.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa has seen an annual shrinkage rate of 2.67% in ATMs nationwide since 2012. bank (a bank with physical branches and an ATM network) that has a large base of lower-income individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These customers rely on cash for transactions more than other consumers, which also informs Capitec&#8217;s expansion of other physical points of presence, <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/826555\/major-banks-closing-down-and-shrinking-branches-in-south-africa\/\"><strong>like branches.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even as the bank expands its physical network, Fourie said that the bank prefers that its customer base move away from cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A shift to digital payments is seen as more secure for the customer, decreasing the chances of fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that using cards and digital payments also gives Capitec more data on its customers&#8217;
