The rand, government bonds, and stocks all experienced gains<\/a> on Friday as investors reflected on the two-day Group of 20 finance meeting hosted by South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the motto “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” South Africa aimed to promote an African agenda and addressed topics such as the high cost of capital and funding for climate change initiatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rand was trading at 17.7050 against the U.S. dollar, up approximately 0.6% from Thursday’s close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The JSE’s Top-40 index increased by 1.5%, while the broader All-Share index rose by 1.4%, nearing an all-time high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, 21 July, the rand was trading at R17.71 to the dollar, R23.76 to the pound and R20.60 to the euro. Oil was trading slightly lower at $69.36 a barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SABC’s VAT plan:<\/strong> The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has told Parliament it is considering making TV licenses zero-VAT-rated. However, if this happens, the SABC said it won\u2019t reduce its license fees but will keep the difference as profit, potentially generating an additional R100 million in revenue. Eskom’s R70 billion contract:<\/strong> Hillside Aluminium, one of Eskom’s biggest customers, receives about a 50% discount, resulting in a net benefit of R7 billion annually over a 10-year contract for Hillside that other consumers must cover. Hillside’s tariff will increase based on the Headline Producer Price Index, while other customers face a 12.74% price hike for 2025\/2026. Two laws waiting for Ramaphosa:<\/strong> President Cyril Ramaphosa has two Bills waiting for his signature, which focus on changes for older persons\u2019 care in South Africa and the 2025 Budget. [BusinessTech<\/a><\/strong>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inflation expectations:<\/strong> The June CPI reading and the vote on the Appropriations Bill are both on Wednesday, 23 July. The CPI is expected to rise slightly but stay within the SA Reserve Bank\u2019s 3%- 6% range, with the Bureau for Economic Research forecasting a year-on-year CPI of 3%, mainly driven by food. Nedbank slammed in court:<\/strong> Acting Judge Fiona Southwood of the Johannesburg High Court stopped Nedbank from foreclosing on 12 properties due to multiple violations of court rules and ethical standards. The judge expressed significant concerns about the conduct of the bank’s attorneys and experts and questioned the credibility of the arrears amounts claimed in several cases.
