With an expanded unemployment rate of 54.7%, more than half of its working-age population is not engaged in any form of work.

It is the only province where the majority of adults are either unemployed or have stopped looking completely. The data showed that 14.6% of its unemployed population has given up hope of finding work.

KwaZulu-Natal follows closely, with 14.5% of its unemployed no longer job hunting, while Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape are at 14.4% and 14.2% respectively.

These figures are made worse by the fact that unemployment rates in these provinces are so high that they are close to joining the North West in having more people unemployed than working.

Mpumalanga’s expanded unemployment rate now sits at 48.4%, while KwaZulu-Natal’s is at 47.9%. Limpopo is also a growing concern at 47.7%, with the Eastern Cape not far behind at 47.6%.

Nationally, Stats SA noted that the labour force grew slightly in the second quarter of 2025, but the increase in unemployment far outpaced job creation.

The number of employed people rose by 19,000 to 16.8 million, while the number of unemployed climbed by 140,000 to 8.4 million.

The official unemployment rate rose from 32.9% in the first quarter to 33.2% in the second. The expanded unemployment rate dipped marginally from 43.1% to 42.9%.

One province continues to outperform the others

The formal sector added 34,000 jobs, while the informal sector shed 19,000. Trade saw the largest increase in employment, adding 88,000 jobs, followed by private households with 28,000 and construction with 20,000.

However, these gains were offset by losses in community and social services (down 42,000), agriculture (down 24,000), finance (down 24,000), transport (down 15,000), utilities (down 6,000), and manufacturing (down 5,000).

Provincially, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape recorded the biggest increases in employment, adding 95,000 and 89,000 jobs respectively.

In contrast, the Western Cape shed 117,000 jobs, KwaZulu-Natal lost 86,000, and the Northern Cape saw a reduction of 28,000.

Despite its job losses, the Western Cape continues to outperform the rest of the country, maintaining the lowest official unemployment rate at 21.1%.

It is also the only province with an expanded unemployment rate below 30%, highlighting its ability to keep more people engaged in the labour market.

Over the past ten years, the unemployment rate in the Western Cape has consistently remained below South Africa’s national average, while the Eastern Cape has consistently recorded unemployment rates above the national level.

The official unemployment rate increased in six provinces between the first and second quarters of 2025. The largest increase was recorded in the Northern Cape.

Over the past ten years, the formal sector has also been the main contributor to total employment in South Africa, accounting for 6.2% of total employment in Q2 2025.

However, Stats SA announced earlier this week that it will revise and review certain aspects of its surveys to better capture information about South Africa’s informal sector.

This followed engagements between the minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke, senior representatives from the National Treasury, and former Capitec Bank CEO Gerrie Fourie.

Stats SA said that it is open to exploring the development of a statistical register for small-scale and informal businesses, which he said would strengthen the quality and granularity of labour market data.

To this end, it said that it is now evaluating additional statistical tools, including a register for informal enterprises.

Four provinces in South Africa are seeing an increasing trend of more people giving up on trying to find a job.

[23
853,17458,3651
post-834694","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-south-africa","tag-statistics-south-africa-stats-sa","tag-unemployment
["GET
