Coffee inflation hit a staggering 16.4% in June, making it the leading contributor in the beverages category.

According to Stats SA’s latest basket analysis, South Africa’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose to 3.0% in June, up from 2.8% in April and May, with a month-on-month increase of 0.3%.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded a 15-month high inflation rate of 5.1% in June.

Prices of staples such as white rice, hot cereals, and cold cereals eased, while maize meal recorded a modest 0.4% monthly increase, its lowest since November 2024.

Several dairy products, including fresh milk and eggs, are also cheaper than they were a year ago.

However, the same cannot be said for coffee. Global supply constraints have pushed coffee prices to record highs, with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) highlighting multiple challenges in key producing countries.

Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer, has faced adverse weather, while Vietnam, which, along with Brazil, accounts for nearly half of global output, has been hit by prolonged dry spells that caused a 20% drop in production in 2023/24.

Vietnam’s exports have fallen for two consecutive years, while Indonesia has struggled with excessive rains damaging coffee cherries. This has resulted in a 16.5% production decline and a 23% slump in exports.

These supply shocks, combined with higher global shipping costs, have filtered through to consumers worldwide.

Local coffee roastery Quaffee has echoed these concerns, warning that coffee shortages, rising fertiliser and labour costs, strong global demand, and currency fluctuations all put upward pressure on South African coffee prices.

Silver lining for South Africa’s coffee prices

However, despite these challenges, some economists noted that the US tariffs could change the dynamic.

On 7 August, the US imposed a 30% tariff on South African goods. While Pretoria has said it does not plan to retaliate, it is pushing for a revised trade deal with the US that could be mutually beneficial.

More importantly, America’s trade war has hit several of the world’s major agricultural producers. Brazil and India now face 50% tariffs, Vietnam 20%, Japan 15%, and China has been struck with heavy duties across several product categories.

President Donald Trump has further threatened to add a blanket 10% tariff on all BRICS nations aligned with what he calls “anti-American” policies.

Economists said that these countries are losing lucrative access to the American market and will have to find new buyers for their goods.

“For now, every country is looking for an alternative in terms of where they can sell the products that they were sending to the US, but that is not going to be easy,” explained Thabile Nkunjane, an economist at the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC).

“That means that there is going to probably be a bit of an influx of some of the products, especially those that were being sent to that market.”

For South Africa, this could be good news when it comes to coffee imports. Brazil, which supplies the bulk of the local market, now faces the dilemma of securing new buyers quickly or offloading its coffee at discounted prices.

“Two things are going to happen for Brazil, either they find alternative markets immediately, which isn’t going to happen, or two, they are going to have to sell their coffee at maybe relatively lesser prices,” Nkunjane told the Mail & Guardian.

“For us, who are buyers of their coffee, this is going to be a bargain when we import from them.”

This means that in the short term, South African consumers could see some relief in coffee prices as Brazil and other coffee-producing nations redirect their exports to markets outside the US.

For everyday coffee drinkers, this could soften the blow of months of price hikes, even if only temporarily.

However, Nkunjane cautioned that the reprieve might not last. Brazil’s coffee industry remains vulnerable to erratic weather conditions, and further production shortfalls could push prices higher again.

The country may also decide to diversify its markets rather than flood traditional partners with cheaper coffee, which would limit the benefits South Africa ultimately enjoys.

While the latest trade tensions involving the United States have threatened several industries, they could bring some short-term relief for local coffee lovers in South Africa.

[9872
20934,1809,22374,22430,23118
post-835300","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-coffee","tag-stats-sa","tag-the-food-and-agriculture-organisation-fao","tag-the-national-agricultural-marketing-council-namc","tag-us-tariffs
["GET
