{"id":835426,"date":"2025-08-19T14:12:37","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T12:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=835426"},"modified":"2025-08-19T14:19:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T12:19:25","slug":"sars-announces-more-tax-return-changes-for-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/835426\/sars-announces-more-tax-return-changes-for-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"SARS announces more tax return changes for 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has announced several changes for individual taxpayers who are yet to file their Income Tax Return (ITR12) for the 2025 tax season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following several adjustments and niggles in the system since the filing season opened in July, the tax service has ironed out the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes ensuring the appropriate source codes appear in the correct places and making it clearer where foreign nationals can request their appropriate filing documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter change follows some confusion around which parts of a tax return non-residents are supposed to complete, with the required sections not activating during filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SARS has now implemented an \u201cinterim solution\u201d to activate this part of the tax return, introduced via the SARS Online Query System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-resident taxpayers can request the non-resident section of the tax return. A more permanent solution directly on the tax return through the tax return \u2018wizard\u2019 will be introduced later, SARS said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on what non-residents can do and what qualifies for tax <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/833147\/sars-announces-changes-for-non-resident-taxpayers\/\"><strong>can be found here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new changes that SARS has introduced are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Antedated salary\/pension<\/strong> \u2013 From the 2025 year of assessment onward, if source code 3623\/3673 (for \u2018antedated salary\/pension\u2019 paid for past years of assessment) is completed in the income section of the IRP5 certificate, the directive number will be mandatory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exempt Local Dividends<\/strong> \u2013 Source code 4306 will only display next to the &nbsp;\u2018Exempt Local Dividends\u2019 field from the 2025 year of assessment onwards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exempt Foreign Dividends<\/strong> \u2013 Source code 4307 will only display next to the &nbsp;\u2018Exempt Foreign Dividends\u2019 field from the 2025 year of assessment onwards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capital Gains Tax<\/strong> \u2013 if a taxpayer is in a partnership and there was a disposal of partnership assets\u00a0during the year of assessment,\u00a0 the taxpayer is only required to declare his\/her own portion of the proceeds and base cost on the ITR12\u00a0tax return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Return Type for Foreign Nationals <\/strong>\u2013 A system change was implemented to issue a \u2018resident\u2019 ITR12 by default to all taxpayers classified as foreign nationals. If a foreign national requires a \u201cnon-resident\u201d ITR12 return to be issued, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tools.sars.gov.za\/sarsonlinequery\/ForeignNationals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Non-resident Tax Return Type icon<\/a>&nbsp;on the SARS Online Query System (SOQS) function must be used to request SARS to issue the correct return type for completion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Filing season is about a third of the way complete, with non-provisional taxpayers having until 20 October to complete their tax returns for the year before facing penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SARS issues new scam warning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SARS-scam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SARS-scam-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-780565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SARS-scam-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SARS-scam-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SARS-scam-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SARS-scam.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to announcing the above changes, SARS has also alerted taxpayers to a new scam doing the rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scam is one of many that fall under phishing, but follows a new format where the fraudsters are alerting taxpayers to a letter from SARS that needs to be processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest scam is an email from an address similar to what SARS is using for eFiling notifications i.e. noreply@sars.gov.za. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subject line of the email is \u2018<strong>PROCESS QUOTE LETTER<\/strong>\u2019 and it asks the recipient to \u2018Please kindly process SARS letter for attention\u2019 linking to a fraudulent website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SARS urged any recipients to avoid clicking the link in the email, and to &#8220;hover over the link&#8221; to see whether it\u2019s a strange website name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The taxman said that this is the latest in a host of different types of ways scammers try to nail unsuspecting victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In more traditional cases, users are prompted to give their banking details to make payments, compromising their cards and accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the fraudulent messages and emails that have been doing the rounds focus on these areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Threats of SARS issuing court summonses against taxpayers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Threats of SARS blacklisting taxpayers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Threats of SARS issuing stop orders on accounts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice of outstanding amounts owed to taxpayers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice of outstanding amounts owed to SARS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice of delayed payments pending FICA review<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alerts of pending or active SARS audits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Latest:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Request to process letters from SARS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>SARS has repeatedly warned taxpayers to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to report any suspected phishing attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taxpayers are urged to note the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not open or respond to emails from unknown sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beware of emails that ask for personal, tax, banking and eFiling details (login credentials, passwords, pins, credit\/debit card information, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SARS will never request your banking details in any communication you receive via post, email, or SMS.<\/strong>&nbsp;However, for the purpose of telephonic engagement and authentication, SARS will verify your personal details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SARS will not send you hyperlinks to other websites<\/strong>\u2014even those of banks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beware of false SMSes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SARS does not send *.htm or *.html attachments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SARS will never ask for your credit card details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of these scams can be seen on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sars.gov.za\/targeting-tax-crime\/scams-and-phishing\/\"><strong>SARS\u2019 scams page<\/strong><\/a>.
