{"id":835656,"date":"2025-08-25T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=835656"},"modified":"2025-08-25T17:02:59","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T15:02:59","slug":"the-three-sisters-running-some-of-south-africas-most-influential-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/835656\/the-three-sisters-running-some-of-south-africas-most-influential-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"The three sisters running some of South Africa&#8217;s most influential companies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tsakani, Basani and Refilwe Maluleke are three sisters who occupy senior positions at some of South Africa&#8217;s largest institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsakani has been the Auditor General of South Africa since 2020, Basani was the first Black Female CEO of a bank after taking over at African Bank, and Refilwe now holds a senior marketing position at Discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The siters grew up in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria. Their mother was a teacher, and their father was a lawyer who felt very strongly about education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyweb.co.za\/moneyweb-radio\/a-heart-to-heart-with-sas-first-black-woman-heading-a-bank\/\">While the sisters were still young,<\/a> their parents took them out of their township school amid the unrest in the final years of apartheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before being taken out of school, the police would raid their school, probably once every two weeks, which included teargas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just before my parents took us out, we were having raids \u2013 probably once every two weeks. It was teargas, just complete disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They then went to private school, attending St Andrew\u2019s School for Girls, Johannesburg. The jump to a private school was tough, with years of schooling needing to be repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the early struggles at private school, all three sisters progressed and would go on to university and eventually take on highly influential roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tsakani Maluleke<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Auditor-General.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Auditor-General-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-789653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Auditor-General-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Auditor-General-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Auditor-General-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Auditor-General.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Tsakani is currently Auditor-General of South Africa, the first woman appointed to this role in over 100 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her tertiary studies involved getting a BCom in Accounting at the University of Cape Town in 1996 and a Post-graduate Diploma in Accountancy the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2001, she was a Registered Auditor and Chartered Accountant, having worked as a trainee accountant at PwC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She worked at Worldwide Capital as a Transaction Manager before becoming a Business Finance Manager at the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then worked as a finance director at Izingwe Holdings and was an investor in mining, engineering, infrastructure development, and real estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also served as the President &amp; Non-Executive Board Member of the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2010, she was named Acting CEO of the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority, before joining Deloitte as an Audit Partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She joined the Auditor General in 2012 as the National Leader of Audit Services, before being promoted to Deputy Auditor-General and CEO of the Office of the Auditor General of South Africa in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This made her the first woman to hold this Deputy Auditor-General position in the organisation\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the passing of the late Auditor General, Kimi Makwetu, in 2020, Tsakani was appointed as the Auditor General on a non-renewable term of seven years by President Cyril Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since taking over, she has increasingly pushed for greater financial responsibility from municipalities, with many still not <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/826034\/the-worst-run-municipalities-in-south-africa-actively-harming-the-people-who-live-there\/\">receiving clean audit outcomes<\/a>, which seriously impact service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basani Maluleke<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Basani-Maluleke-African-bank-and-Capitec.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Basani-Maluleke-African-bank-and-Capitec-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-816483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Basani-Maluleke-African-bank-and-Capitec-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Basani-Maluleke-African-bank-and-Capitec-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Basani-Maluleke-African-bank-and-Capitec-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Basani-Maluleke-African-bank-and-Capitec.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Like her older sister, Basani&#8217;s tertiary education started with her getting a BCom in Accounting at the University of Cape Town. She then went on to study an LLB, graduating in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite becoming an attorney like her father, she quickly realised that this was not what she wanted to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She eventually found a job in corporate finance that combined her finance and law expertise at Rand Merchant Bank (RMB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, she furthered her studies and acquired an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management in the USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She returned to South Africa and joined FNB as Head of Private Clients. However, she found that the job didn\u2019t fit her and quickly returned to corporate finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then served as an independent non-executive director for African Bank. She joined the bank full-time in 2017 as the Group Executive Head of Operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, African Bank announced that Maluleke would take over as the bank&#8217;s CEO. This made her the first black woman to run a large-scale bank in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after three years at African Bank, she joined its largest competitor, Capitec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She started as divisional executive of business solutions in 2021 and moved into the role of divisional executive of operations in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July this year, she was promoted to Group Executive of Retail at Capitec, overseeing the bank&#8217;s core banking products.
