This includes a woman who was seriously injured when a concrete block was thrown at her vehicle while she drove along the N2.

An American tourist was robbed and shot while travelling from the airport to Simon’s Town, and an elderly German couple was robbed while driving along Baden Powell Drive near Wolfgat.

Local councillors, including FF Plus’s Emre Uygun, have urged authorities to take stronger action to prevent such attacks.

They warned that the violence threatens not only residents but also Cape Town’s reputation as a tourist destination.

The problem is part of a wider trend across the country. The latest crime statistics from the South African Police Service (SAPS) show that 19,032 “theft out of or from motor vehicle” cases were reported in just the last quarter of the 2024/2025 period.

This works out to around 211 incidents every day between January and March 2025. Gauteng recorded the highest number of cases at 5,307, followed closely by the Western Cape with 4,978, and KwaZulu-Natal with 2,775.

Safety tips

As the crime continues, safety experts are urging motorists to be extra cautious. Tracker, a private security and vehicle recovery company, has issued advice on how to reduce the risk of falling victim to a smash-and-grab.

Their guidance is captured in the acronym SMASH – Surprise, Microns, Avoid, Safe driving, and Help.

Criminals often rely on surprise to carry out their attacks, typically rushing at a car, smashing a window, grabbing valuables, and fleeing within seconds.

They prefer areas that provide cover and easy escape routes, and sometimes use accomplices to distract drivers.

For this reason, motorists are advised to avoid quiet, poorly lit streets and slow-moving traffic in high-risk areas. The “Microns” element refers to protective film that can be applied to car windows.

While it will not prevent a window from breaking, it will hold the fragments together and slow down the attacker, potentially giving the driver enough time to escape.

“Avoid” is a reminder to keep valuables out of sight. Phones, wallets, handbags, laptops, jewellery, and even jackets should not be left on seats or floors, as criminals may take a chance even if nothing valuable is inside.

Motorists are encouraged to use the boot or glove compartment and park only in secure, well-lit areas with visible security.

“Safe” driving is another crucial aspect. Tracker advised motorists to remain alert, avoid distractions, and not engage with street vendors.

It is best to time approaches to traffic lights so you do not have to come to a complete stop, and to look out for warning signs such as broken glass on the road, which often indicates an area where previous attacks have occurred.

Obstacles placed on the road should not be removed – drivers should rather turn around or find another route.

“Help” highlights the importance of reporting incidents immediately. Crimes should be reported at the nearest police station to ensure authorities can respond quickly.

People visiting Cape Town are being warned that syndicates are targeting people travelling to Cape Town International Airport.

[9876
2279,17963,853,7535
post-835709","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle","tag-cape-town","tag-parliamentary-qa","tag-south-africa","tag-tracker
["GET
