IDs and Passports.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said that Nedbank the seventh bank to join the revamped initiative.

Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, African Bank, Absa and Discovery Bank had already signed onto the initiative in the past week.

The department has been trying to increase the number of bank branches offering the system and roll out digital-first Smart ID and passport services to South Africans.

Several banks already offer Green ID, passport renewals, and applications at their branches and offices under a pilot system.

Under the old pilot, bank branches hosted satellite DHA offices, running parallel and duplicate systems to the banks.

In over a decade, only 30 branches in South Africa have offered the service, with most of them in urban areas.

The new rollout is possible through the department’s new live capture system and back-end upgrades, and aims to cut parallel processes and integrate with the banks’ systems.

The newer system uses an overhauled “live capture” system that is rolling out to all DHA branches and working to integrate with the banks digitally.

The department has set the ambitious goal of rolling out Smart ID and passport services to 100 banks by the end of the year, with 1,000 branches by the end of the medium-term (2028/29).

However, the 1,000 target could be reached sooner than expected. Capitec, Standard Bank and FNB are expected to roll out 840 branches in the next year alone.

Although Nedbank’s plans have not yet been released, it will likely massively expand its capabilities from its six current branches.

The only banks that have not yet joined the initiative are Investec and Tyme Bank.

Investec already offers the service at its Sandton HQ under the existing pilot, while Tyme Bank has been in a notable public feud with Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber

Schreiber has clarified that he aims to stop producing and eventually discontinue the barcoded green ID book in South Africa in the medium term period.

The green ID book is the most used identity document in fraud cases on the continent, given the ease with which it can be forged.

The minister has set a short-term goal of ending issuance of the green ID by the end of the year and discontinuing the document entirely by 2029.

The department needs as many access points to the Smart ID as possible, hence the need to partner with banks.

A major existing hindrance has been the department’s online verification system (OVS), which experienced 50% downtime.

This was one of the main culprits of Home Affairs’ constant system problems and a reason why banks hesitated to expand the passport and Smart ID service.

The department said the bank-end problems were due to issues with the state IT company SITA. New regulations have allowed the department to use other service providers.

While the bank branches that offered Home Affairs’ services under the pilot were mainly in urban areas, several banks, such as Capitec and FNB, are now looking to launch the service in underserved communities.

Nedbank is the seventh bank to join the Home Affairs’ new digital partnership to increase Smart ID and passport services at banks.

[961
29,4762,12923,76,1498,1799,499,13474
post-835827","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-banking","tag-absa","tag-african-bank","tag-discovery-bank","tag-fnb","tag-investec","tag-nedbank","tag-standard-bank","tag-tyme-bank
["GET
