{"id":836903,"date":"2025-09-05T07:41:38","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T05:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=836903"},"modified":"2025-09-05T07:41:38","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T05:41:38","slug":"not-a-good-sign-for-the-gnu-and-mercedes-future-in-south-africa-questioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/5-things\/836903\/not-a-good-sign-for-the-gnu-and-mercedes-future-in-south-africa-questioned\/","title":{"rendered":"Not a good sign for the GNU, and Mercedes future in South Africa questioned"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The rand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/south-african-rand-slips-after-us-jobs-data-2025-09-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weakened<\/a> on Thursday against a stronger dollar, following a weaker-than-expected private payrolls report that increased speculation about a potential interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve at its next meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, US private payrolls rose by only 54,000 jobs, falling short of the 65,000 increase that economists surveyed by Reuters had predicted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the rand traded at 17.77 against the dollar, approximately 0.5% lower than Wednesday&#8217;s close.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many risk-sensitive currencies, the rand often responds to global factors such as US economic policy and data, especially when there are no significant domestic economic reports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts noted that the commodity-backed currency has struggled recently, remaining range-bound despite gold prices reaching an all-time high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, 5 September, the rand was trading at R17.74 to the dollar, R23.86 to the pound and R20.63 to the euro. Ahead of next year&#8217;s local elections, eight in 10 South Africans in a global Ipsos poll believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. [<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2025-09-04-eight-in-10-south-africans-think-countrys-heading-in-wrong-direction-new-survey-shows\/?dm_source=dm_block_grid&amp;dm_medium=card_link&amp;dm_campaign=main\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Maverick<\/a><\/strong>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mercedes-Benz&#8217;s future in question:<\/strong>\u00a0Mercedes-Benz Group AG is contemplating sharing its South African plant with a rival following the end of a key US trade pact, raising concerns about the plant&#8217;s viability. A company spokesman stated that evaluations are ongoing as part of regular strategic discussions, but no decision has been made regarding the future of the East London facility. Additionally, Trump&#8217;s 30% tariff on South African imports threatens exports.
