However, this was a 74% improvement from the R7.3 billion loss in the 2024 financial year.

The SOE said that it experienced a major improvement in its operating environment, especially in the rail business, owing to the implementation of its recovery plan.

Weighted average tariff increases drove the increase in revenue as well volume increases in the automotive and rail businesses, partially offset by lower pipeline and container volumes.

The group said that the rise in revenue came despite various challenges impacting the port and rail business.

This included derailments, rail network challenges, theft and vandalism, declining reliability of the legacy fleet, adverse weather conditions, tippler breakdowns and equipment reliability issues.

Looks for partners

As the group wraps up its tactical recovery plan, its focus will shift from operational recovery to transformation and long-term, sustainable growth.

The group said it remains committed to improving the turnaround times, reducing congestion and enhancing the predictability of its services across the rail, port and pipeline businesses.

It said investments in new equipment, digital systems and operational excellence are already yielding positive results.

It noted that private sector participation will remain a cornerstone of its strategy, with several private sector operators now confirmed to operate on Transnet’s rail infrastructure/

The group said that its corporate plan for the coming years includes:

Deepen private sector participation in rail and port operations;

Strengthen financial resilience and governance;

Drive digital transformation and innovation; and

Embed a culture of performance, safety and service excellence.

Following the growing crisis at Transnet, the Presidency also created the National Logistics Crisis Committee in June 2023.

This was crucial in advancing reforms within South Africa’s freight logistics sector.

Transient said that it made significant progress in implementing key initiatives outlined in the Freight Logistics Roadmap (FLR), which outlines the strategic direction for the sector.
