{"id":837191,"date":"2025-09-09T14:45:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T12:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=837191"},"modified":"2025-10-09T13:25:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T11:25:20","slug":"south-african-construction-giant-enters-liquidation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/837191\/south-african-construction-giant-enters-liquidation\/","title":{"rendered":"South African construction giant enters liquidation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Listed engineering and construction firm Murray &amp; Roberts Holdings has been placed into provisional liquidation, following an order of the High Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group confirmed on Tuesday (9 September) that the Gauteng High Court ordered for the provisional winding up of the company, an order for final liquidation expected on 17 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court granted the order at the behest of one of Murray &amp; Roberts Holding&#8217;s creditors, who will seek the final order later in the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A provisional liquidator is expected to be appointed by the Master of the High Court in due course, the group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The company continues to engage with its legal advisors and will keep shareholders informed of any material developments,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The suspension of trading in the company&#8217;s shares, which took effect on 22 November 2024&#8230;remains in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group noted that the provisional liquidation order relates only to Murray &amp; Roberts Holdings Limited, the listed entity, and <strong>does not impact its downstream subsidiary, Murray &amp; Roberts Limited (MRL).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MRL is a separate legal entity currently under business rescue. The business rescue proceedings in respect<br>of MRL remain ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MRL entered voluntary business rescue on 22 November 2024 and is in the process of trying to stabilise proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It recently announced an R80 million injection in post-commencement finance (PCF) for the rescue plan, coming from Differential Captal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the rescue plan, MRL\u2019s mining-related subsidiary businesses, including the Cementation operations in both Africa and the America, will be sold to a group of investors led by Differential Capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once completed, the transaction is expected to safeguard approximately 2,800 jobs across these businesses, with a particular emphasis on preserving South African jobs in Cementation Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MRL business rescue practitioners said that they were confident that the adopted business rescue plan represents the most sustainable and viable path forward for the business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as MRL was the main commercial subsidiary of Murray &amp; Roberts Holdings, the plan leaves the latter with no revenue-generating unit, and thus commercially insolvent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This led to the liquidation proceedings of the holding company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Murray &#038; Roberts Holdings has been placed into provisional liquidation, following an order of the High Court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":837192,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9872],"tags":[3729,23567],"class_list":["post-837191","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-liquidation","tag-murray-roberts-holdings"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/837191","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=837191"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/837191\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":839502,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/837191\/revisions\/839502"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/837192"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=837191"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=837191"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=837191"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
