Makro and Game have unveiled their first Black Friday specials, which will launch on 24 October 2025 and run throughout November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Friday originated in the United States in the 1960s when retailers saw a rise in consumers shopping the day after Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term \u201cBlack Friday\u201d originally had a negative connotation. The police used it to refer to the congestion of shoppers on this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, retailers changed the narrative of this term to indicate that it was a day they went from the \u2018red\u2019 into the \u2018black\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The popularity of Black Friday rose in the 1970s and 1980s, and retailers competed with each other to offer bigger and better specials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2005, Cyber Monday was born to profit from a spike in online sales the Monday following Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Friday and Cyber Monday first made their way to local shores over a decade ago, with online retailers initially promoting the day as a day of special deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brick and mortar shops joined the party with prominent retailers like Checkers, Pick n Pay, Makro, and Game offering special offers on Black Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the years have gone by, more retailers have started to launch specials over a week or even during the entire month of November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This trend has caught on as South African retailers try to maximise the hype around Black Friday to drive sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Black Friday falls on 28 November. However, many retailers have already started to prepare their promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makro and Game announced that their Black Friday promotions will launch on 24 October 2025 and run throughout November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increased traffic on the Makro and Game websites indicates that air fryers, fridges, washing machines, and premium liquor are the top search terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSouth African shoppers are very strategic when it comes to big-ticket items. They do their research early,\u201d said Langa Khanyile, marketing executive at Massmart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said consumers sometimes pause big-ticket purchases as Black Friday approaches to save on these products, which may come on special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khanyile\u2019s views were substantiated by a MyBroadband survey in which 94% of respondents said they will start looking for Black Friday deals early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

73% of respondents in the MyBroadband survey said they prefer retailers that reveal their Black Friday deals early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makro and Game unveil early Black Friday deals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Makro and Game have responded to the Black Friday trend by offering discounts of up to 50% on air fryers, fridges, washing machines, and premium liquor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are offering a Samsung 58-inch TV for R5,999 and a Lenovo Intel Core i5 Laptop at R7,999. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

South African consumers can also save money on a Hisense 7kg front loader washing machine and a Martell VS Single Distillery Cognac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makro and Game are offering free delivery on online orders of over R500. Customers can also use the Pickup option to shop online and collect the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
